What is the G20?

• The chief meeting of the international cooperation on the most important issues of the global economic and financial agenda.

• Founded in September of 1999 in Washington DC because they needed to solve the major crisis of 1997-1998 (evolving countries)

• This article discusses India´s viewpoint on the G20. The president believes that in order to get things done, the G20 has to set their agenda as to what their main goal is because they cant go about solving all problems. G20 agenda should be sharper and focused only on those issues on which it can make a distinctive contribution, particularly, on economic and financial matters. He also points out that the G20 might become a loose forum instead of a powerful steering wheel of global governance.

What is the G8?

• G8 is an organization that brings together 8 global leaders to address international issues and tackle the most pressing global challenges.

• 8 countries: UK, Canada, Russia, United States, Italy, Japan, Germany and France

• In order to be a part of the G8, the country has to be a leading nation, industrial country and have a democratic society

• Every meeting, the country where the event is hosted is in charge of the G8 chair. It is responsible for organizing the summit, ministerial and meetings

• 1973: world experienced the second greatest economic crisis (oil price shock). The United States, west Germany, France and the UK met informally to discuss these issues

• 1974: Japan is invited to the meetings• 1975: the French president of the time, wanted to make these

meetings more formal. He invited Italy to be a part of it and the six nations came to an agreement that they would meet annually

• This article was written on June 18, 2013. It discusses the different points of view between Russia and the USA on Syria. Although they have different ideas as to how to arrange the conflict, both agree that there must be a peace agreement.
