Ľudovít štúr• Ľudovít Štúr, born 1815 Uhrovec and

died 1856 Modra, was the leader of the Slovak national revival in the 19th century, the author of the Slovak language standard leading to the contemporary Slovak literary language. Štúr was a politician, poet, journalist, publisher, teacher, philosopher and linguist.

• Young Slovaks burned with the idea of national independence. Ľudovít Štúr expressed his philosophy in one sentence: "My country is my being, and every hour of my life shall be devoted to it."

• Štúr and his friends Jozef Miloslav Hurban and Michal Miloslav Hodža decided to codify the Slovak language standard used today, based on central Slovak dialects – a common language that would unify all Slovaks. They agreed on how to codify the new Slovak language standard and how to introduce it to the public.
