EXEMPT ORGANIZATION TAX EXTENSION

Form 8868

The deadline to file your Exempt or Non-Profit Organization return is less than a month

away. If you need more time to prepare your tax return you can use Form 8868, officially

called an Application for Extension of Time to File an Exempt Organization Return, to file an

extension. The deadline to file an Exempt Organization Tax Extension is May 15, 2014. If

you don’t think you’ll be able to hit that May 15th deadline, you can E-File Form 8868 at

ExpressExtension.com. The IRS will grant you an extra three months to file.

IRS Form 8868 is used by an exempt or nonprofit organization to request:

An automatic 3-month extension of time (6-months for a corporation required to file

Form 990-T)

To apply for an additional (Not automatic) 3-month extension if the original 3-month

extension was enough time.

Automatic Extension

The First Part of a Non-Profit Tax Extension is an Automatic 3 Month Extension of Time to

File. Unless a Non-Profit Organization files a Form 990-T, the first part will only extend the

deadline by 3 months. (990-T extends the deadline for 6 months)

Page 2: Exempt organization tax extension document

Not Automatic Extension The Second Part of this form is an additional 3 month tax extension. This additional

extension can only be filed if the organization has already been granted the first 3 month

extension.

What you will need to file form 8868? For a Exempt tax extension, you’ll need your name, address, EIN(Employer Identification

number)/ FEIN, estimated amount of tax owed to the IRS if any and the type of the tax

form that normally file your income tax returns on (for example, 990, 990-EZ, 990-T, etc.)

How do I electronically file for an extension?

Form 8868 Parts I and II can now both be filed electronically or on paper. You must use an

authorized e-file provider to file Form 8868 electronically.

The Extension form cannot be e-mailed to the IRS. A copy of the Extension should not be

attached to an e-filed return. Choosing to file extension electronically does not require you

to file to return electronically.

The e-file requirement for the large exempt organization applies to Forms 990 and 990-PF,

and doesn’t apply to the extension form. The extension may be filed electronically or on

paper.
