Sustainability Strategies
Flora Moon, Expressworks and Sophie Theys, Bureau Veritas
Performance and Maturity
What is the need for a performance framework? • Correlations between organizational capability and sustainability
performance ability not well understood within companies • Sustainability performance requires capabilities not always found in
operations • Information gathered (like HES or social performance) is not
necessarily used to make business decisions • Information needed for performance measurement is not readily
available in analyzable forms

Performance and Maturity
Why maturity models • Well understood, used in information technology since the late 1990s • Employed in the safety realm since mid 2000s to develop and
promote safety in aviation, petrochemical, rail and mining industries. • Developed to allow for understanding individual company level
of maturity through assessment of compliance levels with various key elements of safety culture
• Identification of maturity levels can help companies identify various techniques to address behavioral, cultural and functional issues to drive improvement
