If you have been inactive for quite some time, or have a history of heart trouble, talk to your doctor before shoveling snow. Also avoid caffeine or nicotine before shoveling. These stimulants, increase your heart rate and place extra stress on your heart.

Slip & Falls

Steps to take that can help you avoid slipping and falling.

1. Take your time, and be prepared to fall.2. Look for ice, be aware that it may be covered under snow.3. Watch for water in indoor hallways or floors that is due to melted snow

being brought in from outside. 4. Be aware that floor mats can get bunched up, creating a trip hazard.5. Walk in designated walkways as much as possible.6. Fill out a winter awareness card prior to performing snow removal.

Use slip-on traction devices when working on ice.

Avoid plastic & leather soleswear gloves & keep both hands free

for balance.Watch for melted snow indoors.

Fill out vehicle check cards when checking vehicle.Stop at all stop signs and stop lights.Watch for pedestrians at cross walks.Use safety approved seatbelts and car seats.Watch for Deer crossing roadways.Black Ice may be buried underneath snow.Give yourself extra time to stop.

1. Be aware of icicles that are out of your normal line of vision.2. Large overhead icicles should be discovered and eliminated.3. Be aware they can cause serious harm or death to pedestrians below.4. The Dow Fire Department is available to knock down large icicles that may pose

serious risk to workers or Dow visitors.5. Icicles can be in unexpected places in process areas.

Calcium Chloride is effective at temperatures below 0° F; -18 ° C and is fast acting. Salt is effective, but you may need to use more of it in lower temperatures

Sand: Can be used at all temperatures and is effective for additional traction on ice and snow. Sand will not melt ice and snow.

Its important to remember that snow should be shoveledbefore ice-melt is applied. Shoveling snow and applying ice-melt are two different tasks, and serve different purposes.

Also: Remember to use ice-melt wisely and to reuse Peladow shakers by refilling them. Peladow is stored at 1100 Building.
