The use of the correct Personal Protective Equipment at work is essential. The work-ing environment and conditions determine the most appropriate protection in order to guarantee the safety of employees. In this catalogue all the functionalities and charac-teristics of RX® PPE are explained. A great deal of attention has gone into ergonomics and design - without compromising on quality. This means end-user acceptance is high, and compliance with your company’s PPE policy is assured.

In addition, we’ve paid extra attention to guidance in relation to the correct use of RX® PPE. For respiratory protection, the catalogue also provides more information about Fit Testing. Here potential wearers are individually taught how to properly fit a mask. This test can also show whether the mask is truly suited to the facial features of the wearer.

What does the laW say? Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is equipment intended to be worn or held by a person as protection against health and safety hazards.

When does the employer need to make personal protective equipment available?First of all, risks should be avoided as much as possible at source. When risks cannot be ruled out 100%, the employer is obliged to apply collective protection measures (e.g. by putting a safety guard around a machine). If the aforementioned measures cannot be applied, the em-ployer must make appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) available, and provide training in its proper use. The employee in turn is required to use the Personal Protective Equipment made available to them.

Disposable masksFine particles, toxic gases, vapours, smoke or mist in the atmosphere are latent health hazards. In the short term, they can cause or worsen acute problems with your airways and in the long term they affect the lung function … and this can have dire consequences of course.

By acting preventatively and providing employees with suitable respirators, a large part of the unhealthy effect can be eliminated.

However, correct use of these respirators is crucial. When the masks are not put on correctly or do not entirely correspond with the face profile, the necessary protection is insufficient or even non-existent. That is why ERIKS attaches so much importance to the correct use of the disposable masks.

A Fit Test will determine what type of mask is best suited to the wearer. It also trains the employee in how to fit a mask correctly.

See page 8 for more information about Fit Tests, or contact your local ERIKS Service Centre.

The law specifies that the employer must carry out a risk inven-tory and evaluation (RI&E) to map possible dangers and take measures if necessary.

ce marking & technical standards Personal Protective Equipment in Europe must have CE marking. To award it to a product, a technical inspection by an independent authority is required as well as a prescribed quality control by the supplier.

european standard (en)These products meet the requirements of EC Directive 89/686/EEC (Personal Protective Equipment Directive) and are therefore CE marked.RX® masks have been tested and CE approved in accordance with EN 149:2001+A1:2009.

cmr substances – carcinogenic mutagenic repro-toxic substancesCMR substances are carcinogenic mutagenic repro-toxic sub-stances. More specifically, substances which on their own (car-cinogenic substances) or in combination with other substances (mutagenic substances) can cause cancer. Repro-toxic sub-stances can have a negative effect on fertility, but also cause damage during the development of the unborn child and result in congenital disorders.

npF - nominal protection FactorThe theoretical protection level of a respirator is based on the performance measured during tests in laboratories. The NPF is calculated by the Total Inward Leakage (TIL), as specified in the EN in question, divided by 100. The maximum concentra-tion of a substance in the air, against which a respirator offers protection, is calculated by multiplying this NPF with the limit (the limits are specified in the lists published by the European authorities). The Nominal Protection Factor is a number denoting the level of minimal protection of the relevant type of mask. The higher the number, the better the protection.

apF - assigned protection Factor Determined following practical tests in the workplace. Unsat-isfactory maintenance, instruction, incorrect use, movement, etc. are taken into account. As specified in BS4275, APF is the level of protection, which can be realistically achieved for 95% of trained and supervised users.

For more information on workplace exposure limits, and to view the list of substances currently listed visit www.hse.gov.uk

ERIKS does not merely help you with selecting your dispos-able mask, but also gives you more information as to how these high-quality products should be used in order to guarantee maximum protection.

selectionAn RX® disposable mask supplied by ERIKS protects against:

Dust: Particles whether or not floating in the air (i.e caused solid materials are crushed)

Mist: Liquid particles floating in the air Fumes: Metal Particles floating in the air resulting from a

combustion process

Warning:Disposable masks should not be used in Oxy-gen deficient atmospheres, or against harmful gases and vapours in concentrations exceeding the limit value.

useRX® dust masks are high-quality products and offer a high level of protection. However, correct use of the masks is crucial. Incorrect use and a bad fit do not achieve the desired results and can have dire consequences.

steps

Hold the mask firmly and place the bottom headband over the head to the nape of the neck.

Place the mask under the chin, then over the nose, putting the top head band over the crown of the head.

Ensure a good fit by pulling back the side clips on the face and adjust comfort.

Ensure that the nose clip is moulded around the nose security.

Why Fit test?Personal Protective Equipment offers protection against spe-cific risks to the health and safety of employees. However, PPE can also expose the user to to risk through improper use, incor-rect application, etc. The right choice of PPE and their correct use are therefore essential.

More than with gloves, footwear, or eye wear, the correct fit of respirator is critical for its effectiveness. A Fit Test includes training on how to fit a mask correctly to ensure a good face seal.

useA sweet or bitter solution is sprayed into the hood with an at-omiser. If the wearer can taste the substance, he/she will be retested and adjustments will be made as long as the leak re-mains. The test has only been successful if the employee can no longer taste anything. The mask is then approved.

In addition, before and during the Fit Test, a step by step expla-nation is given of how the masks are used correctly to ensure optimum protection.

Please contact your local ERIKS Service Centre for more infor-mation.

The Optiflex rangeThe eyes are arguably the most fragile in terms of damage. Once damage has been inflicted, this often has serious consequences and usually the damage is irreversible. Rightly we should do anything to reduce the injuries to an absolute minimum.

Flying particles cause the majority of eye injuries. Splashes of molten metal or corrosive liquids are detrimental in case of eye contact. When welding, the bright light, the ultraviolet and infrared rays can damage your eyes. Reason enough to be extra careful.

All these different risks demand a specific approach. The working environment is decisive when choosing eye protection. This section explains all functions and features of RX® brand safety glasses. In addition to the protection factor we have paid a great deal of attention to the ergonomic aspect. The revolutionary “Shape Memory Technology”, ensures that RX Safety Eyewear gives exceptional wearer comfort, with the added bonus of a modern, stylish design, for every user.

The innovative RX® coating technology provides the RX® safety glasses with superior resistance to scratches (outside), and fog-ging (inside).

Coatings that have the double-effect (anti-scratch and anti-fog are mixed in 1 coating and therefore attain only half the ef-ficiency); the RX® coating is 100% effective. The 2 coatings are applied separately where the anti-scratch coating is applied exclusively on the outside, and the anti-fog exclusively on the inside.

anti-scratch:The treatment of the external surface of the lens with this coat-ing forms a hard film which constitutes a barrier against superfi-cial damage which obstructs the view. The RX® lenses are thus protected against scratches and wear caused by friction with hard particles and dusty surroundings. The RX® Anti-scratch treatment is certified according the K re-quirements of the EN166 standard.

anti-fog:The anti-fog treatment is a film with a thickness of a few mi-crons which is applied to the entire inner surface of the lens. The chemical and physical characteristics of the coating pre-vent condensation because the coating absorbs the fog. The RX® anti-fog coating is permanent and is certified accord-ing to the N requirement of the EN166 standard.

Where protection, quality and design meet!

Maximum comfort and the highest level of protection are essential when eye-protection must be worn for both longer and occasional periods. Features such as lightweight, stability and a perfect fit contribute to this end.

The RX® Optiflex-C lens is an integral part that helps shaping the geometry of the safety glasses. The lens is only fitted in the middle of the frame, resulting in a perfect adaptation to the contours of the face. Hence an excellent fit is assured without compromising the pro-tective characteristics.

The RX® Optiflex-B brown lens improves the adaptation of the eye to variable lighting con-ditions. This makes the safety glasses highly suitable for activities where bright light and shadow interact.

rX® safety footwear relieve the feet and the back

The innovative design of RX® safety shoes & boots promote wearer comfort and ensure better protection of the foot. The component parts of the safety footwear are processed in such a way that no internal materials irritate the foot.

Technical textile materials, such as MS3, are primarily used for the anti-per-foration sole. This makes it possible to cover the entire sole as opposed to a steel plate, which offers no protection around the outer edge. Additionally, MS3 textile offers better protection in cold and warm temperatures. MS3 textile anti-perforation sole also provides more sole flexibility and improved walking comfort.

SAFETy FOOTWEAR

a study on the anatomy of the foot

The days of wearing heavy safety footwear, offering poor standing and walking comfort, and annoying, hard, irritating materials are now finally gone. Wear-ers of safety footwear now demand much greater comfort – especially those working long shifts. The provision of high quality safety footwear to employ-ees results, not only in accident reduction, but also a reduction in worker fatigue. Less fatigue = increased productivity. The development of RX® safety footwear is based on the anatomy of the foot, and the way in which a person moves around dur-ing a working day. This has resulted in safety foot-wear with a difference.

safety GloVes Why hand protection? The hand is a complex body part and contains an ingenious network of nerves and tendons that allow us to execute the most ordinary to the most complex motor movements.

During every day activities all parts of the hand are exposed to risks such as cuts and burns, chemicals, etc. Most accidents involving injury to the hands happen in the workplace. Without adequate protection, any injury, no matter how small, can have a serious impact on an indivual, both at work and in the home.

Attention to the various dangers in the workplace and the provision of the cor-rect glove for different applications helps reduce risks to a minimum. This can result in reduced accidents, reduced sickness, reduced litigation, and increased production.

In order to help in making the right choice of Personal Pro-tective Equipment simple, the PPE directive (89/686/EEG) was drafted. The various types of safety equipment are classified, which enables the responsible safety personnel to correctly assess the possible dangers and risks so that adequate PPE

Dyneema® Technology, a patented fibre innovation from DSM Dyneema, offers the most comfortable and lightest solution for extreme cut resistance. This state-of-the-art technology is pushing forward the properties of cut resistance in a lightweight and ‘natural feeling’ fibre.Applying Dyneema® Technology in a lightweight elasticised glove can boost cut performance levels up to EN388 Level 4, without the use of glass fibre or steel wire. It requires no com-promise on comfort, tactility and weight of the glove, while pro-viding significantly higher cut resistant performance, and better durability - especially compared to aramid based gloves.

abrasion resistanceProtective gloves are often exposed to (sharp) objects that can abrade the glove. The more the glove is abraded the less pro-tection it offers. Naturally, the higher the abrasion resistance a glove offers, the longer the wearer is protected. The chart shows the correlation between abrasion resistance and cut resistance consistency. Thanks to the high crystalline proper-ties of the Dyneema® fibre, the abrasion resistance is extremely high; therefore the cut resistance remains at a constant high level, unlike other materials like cotton and aramids that show a decline in cut protection during wear of the gloves.

comfortGloves with Dyneema® will keep your hands cool. In order to keep the hand or body temperature on a constant and therefore comfortable level, it is necessary to keep heat emission in bal-ance with heat production. Protective clothes have to support this by dissipating heat from the inside to the outside. High Modulus Polyethylene (HMPE) has the property to transfer heat very quickly from the inside to the outside of the glove. Thanks to HMPE’s high heat conductivity, a glove made with sufficient HMPE content can release body heat much faster to the outside of the glove compared to other materials. This will prevent body heat accumulation inside the glove and thus sweaty hands.

The higher the Dyneema® content in a glove, the higher the comfort. The heat accumulation on the inside of a glove after one hour of static wear shows that there is correlation between hand temperature and HMPE content of the glove.

The picture visualises what the end user will feel. The hands will stay dry and cool when wearing gloves all day – the actual temperature will stay close to body temperature. Gloves with other fibres cause an increase of hand temperature of several degrees above body temperature. The result is that the more HMPE fibre used in the glove, the more comfortable and cooler it will feel.

en388 protective gloves against mechanical risksThe following equipment is used to assess the properties of gloves specified by the EN388 standard.

a martindale wear and abrasion tester is used to measure the abrasion resistance. The test involves rubbing samples, cut from the palms of gloves, against a standard glass paper until a hole is worn through one of the samples. The number of abra-sion cycles is used to assess the performance.

a sodemat (coup) cut tester is used to measure the resist-ance to cutting. Samples are cut from gloves and placed in a frame which enables a circular, counter-rotating blade to slice through the glove material. The number of cycles required by the blade to cut through the glove are recorded. These are con-verted into a cutting index by comparison with the number of cycles required to cut through a standard reference material. The standard now allows for an alternative test method to be used for highly cut resistant products and this test is described in EN ISO 13997. It measures the force required to make a cut in the test sample 20mm long and is often referred to as the

ISO Cut Test. Performance levels are established according to cutting index.

Puncture and tear resistance are measured with a tensometer. Puncture resistance is measured as the force required to break through samples from gloves with a standard puncture needle (it should be noted that the design of this needle is comparable to that of a large nail, and the puncture strength from this test cannot be used to assess resistance to puncture by hypodermic needles). Tear resistance is measured as the force required to tear apart samples from the glove, which are in the form of a pair of trou-sers (this test is also known as a trouser tear test). The legs of the trouser samples are pulled apart and the maximum force used to assess tearing resistance of the material.

en420 general requirements for glovesThis standard includes tests for glove dimensions, dexterity and allergens. For example, leather gloves are required to have a chromium VI content less than the limit of detection. Gloves are required to be neutral with respect to skin contact.
