A temporary residence permitA temporary residence permit: it is a document granting a foreigner the right to live in Lithuania for a temporary period of time, which is indicated. A foreigner has the right to choose a place of residence in Lithuania, change it, leave from Lithuania, and come back if temporary residence permit is still valid. A foreigner, who has the permit of temporary residence in Lithuania, can travel to the Schengen countries, and be there up to 3 months.

A person, who leaves Lithuania for more than 6 months, must declare his/her departure. A temporary residence in Lithuania permit is issued to a foreigner, who is not a citizen of a European Union Member State. It is usually issued for one year.

The grounds for obtaining the temporary resident permit

The most often the bases to get the temporary residence permit of Republic of Lithuania are the business, family reunification, work or studies. The purchase of real estate is a ground to get the Schengen visa, but it is not the base to get the temporary residence permit of Republic of Lithuania.

What documents are required to get a temporary residence permit in Lithuania?

1.Appropriate form of application to issue a temporary residence permit;

2.A valid travel document;

3.A valid visa, if visa-free regime does not apply, or a permit of residence and its copy, when the application for a temporary residence permit is submitted to Migration Service;

4.Photo (40x60 mm);

5.Documents proving the right of a foreigner to obtain a temporary residence permit;

6.Documents proving that a foreigner has sufficient amount of money and (or) receive income regularly which is sufficient to subsist in Lithuania;

7.A document regarding place of residence in Lithuania;

8.A health insurance document.

Before submitting an application for a, a foreigner must pay a certain amount of fee, which is determined by the Government of the Republic of Lithuania, for the documents of a temporary residence permit processing.

The term of documents' preparationThe preparation of the documents for the temporary residence permit of Republic of Lithuania – 1 week.

The place where the documents for the temporary residence permit have to be submittedThe person can submit the documents for the temporary residence permit of Republic of Lithuania to the Board of Migration in Lithuania or to a diplomatic mission or a consular post of the Republic of Lithuania abroad.

The term of the decision of the temporary residence permit

The decision to issue the temporary residence permit of the Republic of Lithuania has to be made within 6

months from the submission of the documents.

Extension of a temporary residence in Lithuania permit and Lithuanian citizenship

A temporary permit to live in Lithuania is usually issued for one year. After one year, a person has to contact a competent institution regarding the extension of temporary residence permit for one more year. The temporary residence permit is extended; if there is still a basis for staying, for example, an established company is operating and other. The temporary residence permit can be extended for 5 years in a row or more. After 5 years of continuous residence in Lithuania, a person can contact with competent authorities regarding a permit for permanent residence in Lithuania. In this case, a person has to pass Lithuanian language and basic Lithuanian Constitution exams.

Lithuanian citizenship can be granted to a person, who was legally and continuously living in Lithuania for the past 10 years.
