Solar  and  Wind  Energy  is  becoming  an  appealing  energy  source  worldwide.

Many  people  find  a,rac/ve  the  idea  of  powering  their  homes  or  small  business  using  a  renewable  energy  system.

Page 4: DRM Solar Wind Energy

This  makes  sense  in  terms  of  reducing  energy  expenses  by  becoming  independent  from  power  providers,  but  as  well  as  demonstra/ng  a  Eco-‐Friendly  way  of  living.

Recent  technological  advancements,  made  possible  the  combina/on  of  wind  and  solar  energy  with  the  development  of  hybrid  systems.

With  these  systems,  implemen/ng  Solar/Wind  energy  into  most  homes,  has  become  rela/ve  easy.

Overview

The  combina6on  of  renewable  resources  has  many  benefits.  The  main  are:

➡ Reduces  the  energy  expenses  of  the  house.

➡ Ensures  an  increased  energy  produc6on  and  a  consistent  power  supply.

➡ Solar/Wind  Hybrid  System  requires  less  space  than  previous  systems.

➡ Eco-‐Friendly.

Main  Benefits

Page 10: DRM Solar Wind Energy

Solar/Wind  Hybrid  systems  are  developed  with  the  natural  con6nuous  change  of  the  weather  condi6ons  in  mind.

Usually  sun  and  wind  are  not  high  at  the  same  6me.  Combining  Solar  Panels  with  Wind  Turbines,  we  can  maximize  the  energy  produc6on,  by  gathering  and  conver6ng  power  from  both  these  2  sources.

The  use  of  a  baLery  system  aids  to  provide  a  storage  unit  for  the  produced  energy,  that  will  be  used  under  periods  of  energy  shortage.

This  way,  we  can  ensure  a  non-‐intermiLent  power  supply  during  all  the  year,  independent  of  the  weather  condi6ons.

How  it  works

Page 11: DRM Solar Wind Energy

A  complete  stand-‐alone  power  system  requires  the  purchase  of  the  following  equipment:-‐  Photovoltaic  Array  (Solar  Panels)-‐  Wind  Turbines-‐  BaLeries-‐  Charge  Controller-‐  Power  Condi6oning  Equipment  -‐  Inverter-‐  Safety  Equipment-‐  Metering/Monitoring

Op6onally,  a  stand-‐alone  system  can  include  either  an  engine-‐generator  or  micro-‐hydropower  resources,  to  generate  energy  when  solar  and  wind  energy  is  not  enough.

Equipment

Page 12: DRM Solar Wind Energy

A  Photovoltaic  array  is  an  arrangement  of  mul6ple  photovoltaic  modules  (solar  panels),  designed  in  such  a  way  to  collect  the  solar  radia6on  and  convert  it  into  electricity.

PV  Array

The  number  of  the  panels  determines  the  total  electric  power  a  system  is  capable  to  generate.

A  small  PV  system  is  capable  to  provide  enough  power  for  the  average  needs  of  a  house.

Solar  Panels  can  be  mounted  on  the  ground  or  on  the  roofs.

A  wind  turbine,  is  a  device  that  converts  the  kine6c  energy  from  the  wind  into  electric  power.

Wind  Turbines  have  a  long  technological  history,  that  leaded  to  today’s  wide  range  of  wind  turbines  types.

Wind  Turbine

!

In  stand-‐alone  energy  systems  for  homes,  small  to  medium  size  turbines  are  used  as  a  complimentary  generator  to  contribute  to  the  domes6c  power  needs.

Page 14: DRM Solar Wind Energy

BaLeries  store  the  generated  electricity  for  use  when  the  system  is  not  able  to  produce  (e.g.  cloudy  days,  nights  with  no  wind  etc).

BaGeries

They  usually  have  a  life-‐cycle  of  5-‐10  years  and  can  be  replaced  when  they  lose  their  recharging  ability.

The  number  of  baLeries  is  depending  on  the  actual  needs  and  the  climate  condi6on  at  the  loca6on  of  the  installa6on.

BaLeries  should  not  be  located  in  living  areas  or  near  other  electronics.  It’s  good  to  be  placed  in  a  separate  room,  with  easy  access  for  maintenance  and  replacement.

Page 15: DRM Solar Wind Energy

This  device  is  used  to  control  the  flow  of  the  electric  power  from  the  various  sources  to  the  baLeries  and  the  home  equipment.

Hybrid  Charge  Controller

!

Controller  is  detec6ng  and  op6mizing  the  electricity  flow  among  the  electric  devices  and  the  baLeries,  based  on  the  charging  state  of  the  baLeries,  the  current  produced  energy  and  the  power  requirements  of  the  other  devices.

Modern  Controllers  are  able  to  re-‐act  on  the  changing  condi6ons  and  for  example  automate  the  start  of  an  engine-‐generator  in  case  of  energy  shortage,  or  control  the  charging  cycle  of  the  baLeries,  something  that  can  extend  the  baLery’s  life6me.

Page 16: DRM Solar Wind Energy

Most  electrical  devices  and  equipment  run  on  AC  (alterna6ng  current)  Electricity.  At  the  other  hand,  renewable  energy  technology  produces  and  delivers  DC  (direct  current)  Electricity.

Power  CondiIoning  Equipment

!

In  order  to  run  AC  devices,  the  DC  electricity  must  be  converted  to  AC.  An  inverter  is  such  a  device.

Sensi6ve  electronic  equipment  like  computers,  televisions  etc,  require  a  consistent  voltage  and  a  smooth  sine  wave  profile  of  electric  power.

Inverters  and  other  power  condi6oning  equipment  are  used  to  equalize  the  requirements  between  the  devices  connected  to  the  home  circuit  and  the  power  provided  by  the  system.

Page 17: DRM Solar Wind Energy

It  is  always  important  to  enhance  the  safety  of  an  electric  system,  in  order  to  protect  the  system  itself  against  damages,  but  also  people  from  harming.

The  main  dangers  are  during  storms  with  lightening  events,  power  surges,  short-‐circuits  events,  devices  malfunc6on  etc.

Main  protec6on  against  such  hazards  includes:

-‐  Safety  Disconnects:  Automa6c/Manual  safety  disconnects  to  protect  the  system  or  human,  during  accidents  or  maintenance.

-‐  Grounding:  Power  generators  and  electric  devices  need  to  be  grounded.

-‐  Surge  Protec6on.

Safety  Equipment

Page 18: DRM Solar Wind Energy

Devices  to  meter  and  monitor  the  power  consumed,  the  charging  level  of  baLeries,  the  baLeries  voltage  etc.

Metering  &  Monitoring

The  exact  type  of  equipment  and  the  number  of  units  you  are  going  to  need  to  power  your  home  of  office,  is  depending  on  what  you  want  your  system  to  do.

The  simplest  system  is  to  directly  connect  the  power  generated  by  the  system  to  your  home  equipment  for  immediate  use.

But  if  you  want  to  also  store  the  excess  of  the  generated  power,  then  you  are  going  to  need  baLeries,  charging  controllers  etc.

Please  do  not  hesitate  to  contact  us  with  the  requirements  of  your  installa6on  and  we  will  plan  for  you  the  right  solu6on.
