Ready?

Here we go.

Page 18: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

This is a road.

Page 19: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

This is a road.

Just like the roadsin your area.

Page 20: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

(Yeah. Right.)

Page 22: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

But our road doeshave one thing...

Page 23: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

But our road doeshave one thing...

…WIND!

Page 24: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

There are 3 typesof wind.

Page 25: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

HEAD WIND.Wind that hits you in the front.

Page 26: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

CROSS WIND.Wind that hits you from the side.

Page 27: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

TAIL WIND.Wind that hits you in the back.

Page 28: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

TAIL WIND.Wind that hits you in the back.

(it’s the best kind of wind)

Page 29: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

These two dots represent cyclists.

Page 30: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

And let’s saythey’re riding with a

HEAD WIND.

Page 31: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

The red cyclist is DRAFTING the blue

cyclist.

Page 32: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

Because the blue cyclist is breaking through all

of the wind.

Page 33: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

Because the blue cyclist is breaking through all

of the wind.

Giving the red cyclist a human wind blocker.

Page 34: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

Doing this, the blue cyclist is working 100%.

Giving all her energy to push through the wind.

Page 35: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

Doing this, the blue cyclist is working 100%.

Giving all her energy to push through the wind.

While the red cyclist is working 20-30% less!!

Page 36: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

Doing this, the blue cyclist is working 100%.

Giving all her energy to push through the wind.

While the red cyclist is working 20-30% less!!

That’s how weakerriders can stay with

stronger ones.

Page 37: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

And that is the most simple way to describe

DRAFTING.

Page 38: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

And that is the most simple way to describe

DRAFTING.

Some things you should remember about

DRAFTING:

Page 39: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

1. STAY ALERT,if you stare at the wheel in front of you, you won’t be

ready for any abrupt movements that person

might make.

Page 40: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

1. STAY ALERT,if you stare at the wheel in front of you, you won’t be

ready for any abrupt movements that person

might make.

(Just like driving, you never stare at someone’s bumper. You look up the

road to see what’s coming.)

Page 41: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

2. STAY CLOSE,your wheel should be no more than 2 feet behind

the person in front of you.

Page 42: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

2. STAY CLOSE,your wheel should be no more than 2 feet behind

the person in front of you.

(That’s roughly the width of two laptops)

Page 43: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

2. STAY CLOSE,your wheel should be no more than 2 feet behind

the person in front of you.

(That’s roughly the width of two laptops)

(Any further back and you lose the benefit of drafting.)

Page 44: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

3. STAY RELAXED,keeping your upper body relaxed makes it easier to control your bike and ride

in a straight line.

Page 45: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

Ready for the next lesson?

Page 46: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

Ready for the next lesson?

Great! Let’s talk about PACE LINES!

Page 47: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

Now we have a large group of cyclists.

Page 48: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

And our large group is riding in a…?

Page 49: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

And our large group is riding in a…?

Anyone?

Page 50: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

And our large group is riding in a…?

Anyone?Anyone?

Page 51: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

And our large group is riding in a…?

Anyone?Anyone?

A HEAD WIND!

Page 52: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

Large groups go faster because

people will take turns “on the front”

pushing through the wind.

Page 53: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

Imagine this group “rotating”

around each other.

Page 54: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

The cyclists on the right are moving forward…

Page 55: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

The cyclists on the right are moving forward…

The cyclists on the right are moving forward…

…while the cyclists on the left move back.

Page 56: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

This is calledROTATING

Page 57: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

To make this easier to understand, imagine you

are the cyclist in red.

Page 58: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

To make this easier to understand, imagine you

are the cyclist in red.

Since you’re in the lead, you are pushing through

all the wind.

Page 59: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

To make this easier to understand, imagine you

are the cyclist in red.

Since you’re in the lead, you are pushing through

all the wind.

When you’re doing this we would say you’reON THE FRONT

Page 60: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

This is how you would rotate in the PACE LINE.

Page 72: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

And now you’re backon the front!

You would repeat this over and over and over…

Page 73: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

With DRAFTING and PACE LINES,

Page 74: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

With DRAFTING and PACE LINES,

if the person on the front is doing the work to go

25mph,

Page 75: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

With DRAFTING and PACE LINES,

if the person on the front is doing the work to go

25mph,

Everyone behind her feels like they’re working to maintain 21 or 22mph.

Page 76: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

Got all that?

Page 77: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

Got all that?

Good.

Page 78: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

Effectively using DRAFTING and

PACE LINES will give you the ability to ride with

stronger cyclists.

Page 79: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

But if you’re worried that you’re still not strong

enough to ride with the group…

stronger cyclists.

But if you’re worried that you’re still not strong

enough to ride with the group…

Stop worrying, Because I have a trick to

teach you.

Page 81: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

Imagine you are the cyclist wearing stripes.

Page 82: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

Imagine you are the cyclist wearing stripes.

And everyone else is a much stronger rider.

Page 83: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

Imagine you are the cyclist wearing stripes.

And everyone else is a much stronger rider.

Staying in the back gives you the best draft.

Page 84: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

Watch as the red cyclists rotates while you stay

put.

Page 85: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

Page 92: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

Doing that is calledSITTING ON

or ON THE BACK

Page 93: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

Doing that is calledSITTING ON

or ON THE BACK

But there are some rules to follow

when doing this.

Page 94: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

1. SPEAK UP,always tell the other

riders what you plan to do.

Page 95: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

2. DON’T LEAVE EM,if you start feeling strong try doing a

couple of rotations. Don’t ride away from the

group.

Page 96: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

Feel ready to move on to the next lesson?

Page 97: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

Feel ready to move on to the next lesson?

Good… let’s talk about ECHELONS.

Page 98: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

When riding in aCROSSWIND

a normal PACE LINEdoes not work.

Page 99: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

When riding in aCROSSWIND

a normal PACE LINEdoes not work.

Because so many people have to push

through the wind.

Page 100: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

a normal PACE LINEdoes not work.

Because so many people have to push

through the wind.

Only these three girls stay

“in the draft”

Page 101: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

So instead of aPACE LINE

we ride in an…

Page 102: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

…ECHELON!

Page 103: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC

And there is a way to rotate in the ECHELON

as well.

Page 104: Drafting Tutorial by Kelli of PRC
