What is Hot Dip Galvanization?

• Hot dip galvanizing is the most common method of galvanizing. This process includes the submergence of iron or steel in a molten zinc bath.

• This process acts as a barrier between the atmosphere and steel and even if the galvanized coating gets damaged and steel gets exposed to the atmosphere, the zinc with the help of galvanic corrosion protects the steel.

What is Electro-Galvanization?• Electro-galvanizing is a process in

which a layer of zinc is bonded to steel in order to protect against corrosion.

• The process involves electroplating running a current of electricity through a saline/zinc solution with a zinc anode and steel conductor.

Hot Dip • Stringent cleaning procedure is followed.

• Steel is dipped into the molten bath of Zinc.

• Produces a Fe-Zn alloy

• Very high life, of the order of 20-50 years.

• Dull finish and usually is not very pleasant

Electro• Stringent cleaning procedure is not usually

followed.

• Steel is made the cathode in the electrolytic cell

there by forming the coating by Electroplating

process.

• Produces a layer of Zn

• Very low life, few months to few years.

• Good finish and uniform coating.

• cheaper in comparison to hot dip galvanizing.
