Crack Sealing

Page 7: "Dealing with the New Normal" - Making the Most of Reduced Resurfacing Budgets

Crack Seal Process Description

1.Clean debris & organics out of cracks

2.Extrude sealant material into cracks

3.Dust with cement dust to accelerate set time

Page 8: "Dealing with the New Normal" - Making the Most of Reduced Resurfacing Budgets

Crack Seal Benefits

1.Retard Reflective Cracking

2.Prevent Moisture Intrusion to Base

Micro-Surfacing

Page 11: "Dealing with the New Normal" - Making the Most of Reduced Resurfacing Budgets

Micro-Surfacing Process Description

1. Granite aggregate & asphalt emulsion are combined onsite.

2.The slurry is applied to the existing asphalt in one or two lifts.

Page 12: "Dealing with the New Normal" - Making the Most of Reduced Resurfacing Budgets

Micro Surfacing Benefits

50% – 70% less $ than conventional asphalt overlay or mill & overlay.

Maintains existing roadways at a higher level of service.

Chip Seal / Surface Treatment

Page 15: "Dealing with the New Normal" - Making the Most of Reduced Resurfacing Budgets

Chip Seal Types

 Single Chip Seal

 Double Chip Seal

 Cape Seal

Page 16: "Dealing with the New Normal" - Making the Most of Reduced Resurfacing Budgets

Chip Seal Process Description

1.Apply a thick layer of asphalt emulsion

2.Apply a layer of granite aggregate

Page 17: "Dealing with the New Normal" - Making the Most of Reduced Resurfacing Budgets

Chip Seal Benefits

Chip Sealing is the most cost effective resurfacing technique available.

When topped with fog seal, Chip Seal takes on the appearance open grade asphalt.

Cold In-Place Recycling

Page 20: "Dealing with the New Normal" - Making the Most of Reduced Resurfacing Budgets

Cold In-Place Recycling Process Description1. Inject asphalt emulsion stabilizing agent while milling the existing asphalt.

2. Conveyor recycled material into a modified asphalt paver.

3. Lay the recycled material down at the appropriate cross-slope and elevation.

4. Pave over the recycled base course with conventional asphalt.

Page 21: "Dealing with the New Normal" - Making the Most of Reduced Resurfacing Budgets

Cold In-Place Recycling Benefits

 Much less $ than remove/replace.

 Minimizes disruption to public.

 Reuses existing materials.

 Removes entire cracking network.

 Adds significant structural integrity.

 Saves taxpayer dollars.

Full Depth Reclamation

Page 24: "Dealing with the New Normal" - Making the Most of Reduced Resurfacing Budgets

Full Depth Reclamation Process Description

1. Reclaim the asphalt and the existing base material and add appropriate stabilizing agent.

2. Grade & shape stabilized base material to the proper grades and elevations.

3. Compact the reclaimed base material to achieve density.

4. Prime and pave the finished base with asphalt.

Page 25: "Dealing with the New Normal" - Making the Most of Reduced Resurfacing Budgets

Full Depth Reclamation Benefits

Half the cost of remove & replace.

 Simplifies road widening projects.

 Reuses existing materials.

 Removes entire cracking network.

 Adds significant structural integrity.

 Saves taxpayer dollars.
