“Business is a man’s world.”
CHALLENGES1. Untapped Resources
- resources remain underutilized- relegated to simple tasks- seldom given any critical tasks
2. Role Conflict and Ambiguity- reduced to “Daddy’s little girl”- confusing, unsettling, and stressful- “I just don’t know when my Dad expects
me to be ‘Daddy’s little girl’ or when he expects me to be businesslike. That makes it hard on me.”
3. Conflict with Mother- mothers are threatened by the new
closeness of the father and the daughter- “I used to be closer to Mom, but now I
am closer to Dad. There is a rift between Mom and me because Dad and I are so close working together. Mom and I have tried to get closer. But it’s not easy.”
4. Resistance from Male Managers
- perceived threat to their positions- unsure how to deal with the presence
of daughters
5. Shift to Interdependence- daughters are more inclined to
interdependence just as sons are to independence- more concerned with maintaining peace in
the family- potential advantage in working with
fathers6. Rites of Passage
- daughters often do not undergo the same intensive and structured mentoring programs as sons
- takes longer to earn respect and prove herself
KEY GUIDELINES1. Societal and Familial Expectations
- must allow the daughter the same freedom to pursue their own career dreams as the son
2. Managing a Change of Perspective
- acknowledge and evaluate daughter’s capabilities
3. Succession Planning- consider daughter as a viable successorial
candidate
4. Career Planning and Training
- clarify the expectations of the family and the business separately
5. Communication- keep channels of communication open to
avoid misunderstandings
THANK YOU.
