Daimler Trucks at a Glance.Edition 2013.
| 1
Encompassing Mercedes-Benz, Freightliner, Fuso, Western Star, Thomas Built Buses, and, most recently, BharatBenz, the brand portfolio of Daimler Trucks spans the globe and offers an impressive variety of pro- ducts. Each brand has its own distinctive character and meets the needs of its markets and customers. Daimler Trucks’ mission is to pre-serve the brands’ core nature while also implementing a sophisticated module strategy for maximizing synergies and economies of scale. One of the strategy’s key elements is the powertrain, which accounts for over half of a truck’s value added. The Heavy Duty Engine Platform is now installed in vehicles throughout the triad. The engines are just as much at home in a Fuso as in a Mercedes-Benz or Freightliner Cascadia. We are also making great progress with transmissions, to name another example where our strategy is bearing fruit. Our production network is also truly global, encompassing almost 30 facilities worldwide. We therefore know that our vehicles are being built in or near their sales markets. Our plants need to be very flexible because trucks are not only capital goods but are also very much dependent on economic developments. The cyclical nature of our business means that unit volumes can fluctuate greatly. Our biggest plant, which is located in Wörth at the Rhine in Germany, is exemplary in this respect, as it can substantially adjust capacity up or down as needed. What does the year 2013 hold for Daimler Trucks? We recently launched the Daimler Trucks Number 1 growth and efficiency program, which aims to make us the most profitable globally operating truck manu-facturers. Our aim is to sell more trucks and boost our profits. There are reasons to be optimistic. For example, Mercedes-Benz is already offering its full range of Euro VI-compliant products nine months before the new emissions standard goes into effect. Our customers confirm that this is a fantastic offer. What’s more, in India BharatBenz will experience its first full business year, as will our truck joint venture in China.

Daimler AG is one of the world’s most successful automotive companies. With its divisions Mercedes-Benz Cars, Daimler Trucks, Mercedes-Benz Vans, Daimler Buses and Daimler Financial Services, the Daimler Group is one of the biggest producers of premium cars and the world’s biggest manufacturer of commercial vehicles with a global reach. Daimler Financial Services provides financing, leasing, fleet management, insur-ance and innovative mobility services.
The company’s founders, Gottlieb Daimler and Carl Benz, made history with the invention of the automobile in the year 1886. As a pioneer of automotive engineering, Daimler continues to shape the future of mobility today: The Group’s focus is on innovative and green techno- logies as well as on safe and superior automobiles that appeal to and fascinate. For many years now, Daimler has been investing continually in the development of alternative drive systems with the goal of making emission-free driving possible in the long term. So in addition to vehicles with hybrid drive, Daimler now has the broadest range of locally emission-free electric vehicles powered by batteries and fuel cells. This is just one example of how Daimler willingly accepts the challenge of meeting its responsibility towards society and the environment.
Daimler sells its vehicles and services in nearly all the countries of the world and has production facilities on five continents. Its current brand portfolio includes, in addition to the world’s most valuable premium automotive brand, Mercedes-Benz, the brands smart, Freightliner, Western Star, BharatBenz, Fuso, Setra and Thomas Built Buses. The company is listed on the stock exchanges of Frankfurt and Stuttgart, Germany (stock exchange symbol DAI). In 2012, the Group sold 2.2 million vehicles and employed a workforce of 275,000 people; revenue totaled €114.3 billion and EBIT amounted to € 8.6 billion.

Six strong vehicle brands are combined under the Daimler Trucks umbrella. All over the world, we offer customized applications and pioneering technologies in our products.
» Mercedes-Benz. The Mercedes-Benz brand is a synonym for first-class product and service quality, cost-effectiveness, reliability, and sustainability, as summed up by the slogan “Trucks you can trust.” Whether the vehicle required is for long-haul, distribution, or construction site operation, the Mercedes-Benz brand provides customized and reliable solutions in the medium- and heavy-duty truck segment for its customers. For many decades, the pioneering spirit at Mercedes-Benz Trucks has continuously generated ground-breaking innovations – from alternative drive systems to active and passive safety systems.
» Freightliner. The Freightliner trucks brand is the main pillar of Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA). It manufactures trucks in the classes 5 through 8, which cover a broad range of application areas in the commercial vehicle segment. In line with the “Run Smart” slogan, the company puts its faith in innovation, technology, and customer oriented action.
» Western Star. The Western Star brand offers premium-class heavy-duty trucks, primarily for use by owner-operators or small fleets. Western Star serves market niches such as special and construction site applications as well as long-haul transport. With their striking exteriors and ideal suitability for off-road applica- tions, the vehicles are without a doubt “serious trucks for serious truckers.”
» Thomas Built Buses. They are a common sight on North American roads: the yellow school buses from Thomas Built Buses, which are built on Freightliner chassis. North America’s leading school bus manufacturer can look back on a long and distinguished history. In fact, Thomas Built Buses has been the embodiment of safety and top quality since 1916.
» Fuso. The Fuso brand has made a name for itself worldwide as a quality conscious manufacturer. Its reputation extends well beyond Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. The vehicles developed and produced by Fuso are not only of high quality, they are also cost-effective and tailored to the requirements of their application areas. As a result, customers can totally rely on them, day after day. Fuso offers extremely customer-oriented and comprehensive spare parts and workshop services for its trucks and buses. Today, the Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation (MFTBC) is an integral part of Daimler Trucks. It plays an important role as a competence center for light-duty trucks and state-of-the-art hybrid technology.
» BharatBenz. Through the BharatBenz brand, a local generation of trucks is introduced to India. Until 2014, we will offer 17 BharatBenz models in the weight classes from 6 to 49 tons. The new medium-duty BharatBenz trucks are based on the same technology platform as the established Fuso Canter.

Global Excellence. We intend to increase our market share in the triad as well as in Brazil. In this endeavor, the Mercedes-Benz Actros is the most important truck project of the past decade. As part of our strategy for generating new markets, we will offer customized products for the increasingly important “modern domestic trucks” segment in order to boost growth in these markets.
Through continual cost management and the consistent utilization of synergy potential, Daimler Trucks aims to achieve an eight percent return on sales across the entire business cycle, beginning in 2013. Our global modular system is growing and allows us to develop new products for traditional and new markets at manageable costs. As a result, these product generations will have an unprecedented level of commonality.
Future Product Generations and TechnologiesEnsuring that future product generations offer innovations and even more value for customers is the strategic goal of the fourth initiative within the Global Excellence program. Thereby, Daimler Trucks is strengthening its leadership position in the area of new technologies. The new Mercedes-Benz Actros truck was redeveloped from scratch and presented to the public in 2011. Based on the same platform, the Antos for distribution services as well as the Arocs for construction applications soon followed. All three trucks already meet the Euro VI emissions standard, which is scheduled to go into effect in Europe in 2014. This also applies to the new Atego, which will be introduced in Europe in the spring of 2013. One of the areas Daimler focuses on is alternative drive systems. To this day, Daimler is the frontrunner in the development of hybrid drives – not only for buses, but for trucks as well. At the end of 2011, Fuso unveiled the heavy-duty truck Super Great Eco Hybrid in Japan, and the company presented the new gene- ration of the Fuso Canter Eco Hybrid for Europe as a highlight of last year’s IAA Commercial Vehicle Show. These activities – alongside those in the fields of natural gas and fuel cell drives – are combined in Daimler’s Shaping Future Transportation: CleanDrive Concepts initiative.
New InitiativeAs part of the Global Excellence program, the initiative Daimler Trucks Number One (DT#1) was launched in 2012. DT#1 marks improvements of a magnitude of € 1.6 billion until 2014, which will help to sustainably secure our profitability goals. The potential for improvement comes out of each business unit as well as out of the work packages spanning different business segments, which concentrate on initiatives for increases in sales and revenue and the utilization of synergies and economies of scale through platform and modular strategies. Through DT#1, Daimler Trucks will expand its leading position in the global commercial vehicles industry.
The Global Excellence program has noticeably shaped the strategic direction of Daimler Trucks since 2005. The program encompasses short, medium, and long-term goals. Global Excellence boosts efficiency and generates economies of scale, while also enabling Daimler Trucks to professionally manage the distinct cycles of the commercial vehicles business.
The Global Excellence program encompasses four initiatives: Manage-ment of Market Cycles, Operational Excellence, Growth and Market Penetration, and Future Product Generations and Technologies.
Management of Market Cycles The first initiative – Management of Market Cycles – is designed to make Daimler Trucks less dependent on the cyclical developments that are typical to the sector. This will ensure the long-term profit-ability of the commercial vehicles division. Commercial vehicles are a capital good and, therefore, the market is subject to strong external factors. This includes worldwide economic fluctuations and regulatory frameworks such as exhaust emission regulations, but also the life cycles of vehicle fleets.
Operational ExcellenceThe second initiative – Operational Excellence – concentrates on the rigorous reduction of material and fixed costs, the optimization and standardization of global processes, and the increased flexibility of production plants. The foundation here is a management system known as the Truck Operating System (TOS), which is based on the principle of lean management. TOS is designed to be used not only in production but in all specialized units and departments. Daimler Trucks is also intensifying its efforts to generate additional synergy effects and economies of scale by further networking individual units and pursuing a parts commonization strategy. This realignment is another step in the implementation of the Global Excellence Strategy.
Growth and Market PenetrationWe intend to further expand and strengthen Daimler Trucks’ global presence. This includes the penetration of markets with good growth opportunities, such as Russia, India, or China. We are employing different market penetration strategies that are appropriate for the respective market situations. In markets where we are already active, we want to further strengthen our presence and focus even more intensely on the customers’ needs. Our aim is to grow in terms of quality and quantity alike.

Low-emission and zero-emission trucks, buses, and vans. Commercial vehicles that automatically engage the brakes when they approach obstacles. All-around service – from the purchase of the vehicle and its use to its subsequent disposal – to ensure minimal costs throughout the years of operation. For Daimler Trucks, all of these elements can be summed up as Shaping Future Transportation. Under this caption, we bring together a wide range of technologies and services that make commercial vehicles more environmentally friendly, safer, and more economical.
Our aim is to be the driving force behind sustainable mobility. Daimler is promoting measures to drastically reduce the fuel consumption and emissions of commercial vehicles with its CleanDrive Concepts. This approach extends across all levels of technology – including combustion engines, natural gas and hybrid drives, fuel cell vehicles, as well as alternative fuels. It also applies to all vehicle segments – from light vans to heavy-duty trucks – and all of the Group’s brands around the world. More than 880,000 environmentally friendly com-mercial vehicles are already on the road with SCR technology world-wide; so are approximately 18,000 vehicles with alternative drive sys-tems. In this way, Daimler Trucks is underscoring its leading position in environmentally friendly and sustainable transportation solutions. The Mercedes-Benz Actros is the world’s first long-haulage truck to be systematically designed in line with the future Euro VI emissions standard. At the same time, we were able to achieve a significant reduction of fuel consumption in spite of the adoption of a sophisti-cated emission control system. A further milestone in the reduction of fuel consumption was reached with the use of “Predictive Powertrain Control” in the new Mercedes-Benz Actros and the Mercedes-Benz Antos. This system contains information about the topography of the road ahead, enabling it to control the engine so that fuel consumption is optimized. The system can reduce fuel consumption by an additional three percent.
In parallel, Daimler Trucks is forging ahead with the development of hybrid technology. The new generation of the Fuso Canter Eco Hybrid, which was introduced in Europe in the second half of 2012, repre-sents a milestone. For the first time, it is possible to operate a hybrid truck in a way that is truly economical, and its period of amortization is four years. Recently, the Fuso Canter Eco Hybrid received the Car of the Year Special Award 2013 for its innovative technology in Japan.
The award underlines Fuso’s leading position in green innovation. The new Canter Eco Hybrid consumes up to 23 percent less fuel than a comparable conventional Canter.
As a pioneer in road safety, we are striving to make driving accident free. For years now, all of the major safety system innovations have been invented by Daimler. Our SafeDrive Concepts are paving the way for the widespread and particularly safe use of commercial vehicles in road traffic. From trucks and buses to vans, our vehicles are the benchmarks for active and passive safety. For example, our Active Brake Assist and adaptive cruise control provide truck drivers with electronic support. The new Actros will be not only even more eco-nomical, but also even safer. It already has the reputation of being the world champion heavy-duty truck in terms of safety, and it is now underlining this position with the next generation of the Active Brake Assist 3. This system, which is sometimes referred to as the Emer-gency Braking Assistant, can now independently trigger emergency braking in front of stationary obstacles. This means the Actros can not only mitigate the effects of a rear-end collision, as was already the case, but can also — depending on the speed at which the truck is traveling — prevent such accidents altogether. It’s yet another mile- stone in the development of truck safety. Obviously the new safety systems are transferred to all of our vehicles as quickly as possible. No other manufacturer offers such a wide range of cars, trucks, buses, and vans. Thanks to this approach, our buses can be fitted with systems similar to those used in our trucks. Mercedes-Benz vans have a lot to gain here as well. They can take advantage not only of the safety technology used in commercial vehicles, but also of the systems used in cars, which are more closely related to vans in terms of size and handling.
The third component of Shaping Future Transportation consists of our ValueDrive Concepts, which provide individual customer utility. Commercial vehicles are designed to earn money while also cutting costs as much as possible. However, the purchase price of trucks, vans, and buses represents only a small part of their total cost, as the largest share is accounted for by operating expenses. That’s why Daimler offers a diverse range of customized services that address everything from the vehicle’s purchase and use to its subsequent dis- posal. This issue becomes particularly important in times of econo-mic uncertainty. Mercedes-Benz, Daimler Trucks North America, and Fuso are in a leading position when it comes to offering a comprehen- sive range of services in their respective regions.

Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) produces its 500,000th Freightliner truck and, thereby, celebrates a pro-duction milestone in its plant in Mount Holly, North Carolina. The anniversary vehicle is a medium-duty Freightliner Business Class M2 106 truck. It is now operated by the American electric power company Duke Energy.
More than 2,100 commercial vehicles for Brazil. The Brazilian government sends a major order of 2,100 Mercedes-Benz trucks and vans to Daimler Trucks. This significant order includes 1,700 Atego trucks as well as 400 Sprinter vans produced by Mercedes-Benz. Determining factors for this decision were, among others, the superior quality, a wide range of applica-tion, as well as a low total cost of ownership.
» November 2012 Fuso truck is “Car of the Year”. In Kawasaki, Japan, Daimler Trucks wins the Car of the Year Special Award 2013 for the innovative techno-logy found in the Fuso Canter Eco Hybrid. The light-duty truck impresses through its DUONIC dual clutch transmission in con-nection with a hybrid powertrain.
» December 2012 Daimler demonstrates its ability to deal in times of crises. In 2012, Daimler Trucks proved its ability to withstand economic crises. Sales grew significantly despite great market fluctuations, and the product offensive keeps ad-vancing. Business in India, China, and Russia continues to increase, and considerably higher sales figures are reported out of North America and Asia.
» January 2013 Arocs conquers construction sites. The new Arocs truck for construction sites celebrates its world premiere in Munich, Germany. With the Arocs, Mercedes-Benz is sen-ding its third contestant in the heavy-duty weight class into the fight: the Actros for long-haul transportation, the Antos for heavy-duty distribution services,
and the Arocs in the heavy-duty construction segment. And despite the elaborate Euro-VI technology, all models decrease the total cost of ownership.

NAFTA:
Truck Product Engineering Heavy-Duty/Medium-Duty Conventional Platform
Improved powertrain by Detroit: DTNA is the first truck manufacturer in North America that produces a complete powertrain in-house, including engine, transmission, and axles. Through the integrated truck powertrain, Daimler Trucks is moving closer to its goal of creating synchronized production standards and processes around the globe, in order to manufacture products with the highest quality across all segments and to generate economies of scale through higher production numbers.
The Evolution of Efficiency: The Freightliner Cascadia Evolution builds on the technologies of our previous models – engine efficiency, advanced aerodynamics, fleet management tools – to deliver up to a 7 % increase in fuel economy over our first-generation EPA 2010-compliant Freightliner Cascadia model.
Natural Gas Technology:Freightliner is the market leader in conventional natu-ral gas vehicle production with offerings in the M2,SD and Cascadia models. Compressed natural gas (CNG) as well as liquefied natural gas (LNG) variants are available.
Environment andprofitability:Joint development of a new generation of engines in Europe, the U.S. and Japan
Continuation of the product offensive: In 2012, the new long-haul transportation truck Actros received a brother model. The Antos was specifically deve-loped for distribution application and will serve alongside the Mercedes-Benz flagship truck. The new Mercedes-Benz heavy-duty truck line based on the same platform is com-pleted through the Arocs truck for construction application. The Arocs celebrated its world premiere in January 2013.
Japan:
Truck Product Engineering Light-Duty/Lower-Medium-Duty Platform Cab-over-Engine, MFTBC Buses & Engines as well as Hybrid drive trains
Global Hybrid Center:Daimler Trucks’ center of competence for the development of hybrid systems. The Fuso Canter Eco Hybrid is the first series of economi- cally viable hybrid trucks, which redeems itself for the customer within three to four years. The new Canter Eco Hybrid consumes up to 23 percent less fuel than a comparable conventional Canter.
Fuso Super Great Eco Hybrid:Tests of the long-distance haulage heavy-duty truck Fuso Super Great Eco Hybrid show an increase in fuel efficiency by as much as ten percent versus conventional diesel powered vehicles
Fuso Canter E-Cell:This CO2-free test vehicle is part of the “Shaping Future Transportation” initiative, which focuses on reducing pollutants, carbon dioxide, and fuel consumption through the utilization of clean, efficient drive systems and alternative fuels
