Custom Cable Becoming More Practical, Affordable
The word “custom” is often anathema to project managers and engineers, as unique design and
manufacture of specialty items – even cable assemblies – often drastically increase the cost of
these items. Increasing industry pressures, improving technology and growing demand are
making custom cable assembly more affordable, however, making designing and manufacturing
just the right cable assembly for the job a more desirable solution.
Many companies use standard cable assemblies - cable assemblies mass-produced from a
template - because these assemblies are widely available and less expensive than a custom
solution. These assemblies may not offer all the options and utility that an assembly built for a
specific purpose may offer, but their low cost and the utility they do provide makes them good
enough for use in their buyers’ products.
New manufacturing techniques are making the custom option more desirable, as they are
reducing costs and making production turnaround quicker. Innovative manufacturers of cable
have devised ways of building custom cable assemblies at lower costs and reducing waste of
materials and time.
Much of the increase in cable manufacturers’ ability to produce custom cable solutions is driven
by improvements in customer service. By working with customers to quickly respond to inquiries
and review design submissions, manufacturers get a better idea of what their customers want
and how to quickly and accurately produce that product. The improved efficiency provided by
better customer service also helps companies meet consumer demand for lower minimum
purchases and lower prices for custom solutions to their cable needs.
Custom cable solutions can provide a number of benefits for the industries that use them. The
right cable assembly can save space in a medical device, improve safety on an airline, reduce
the cost of manufacturing an automobile or supply more power to an electronic device. While
standard cable can make a product functional, custom cable can make a product excel.
When selecting a custom cable provider, companies should exercise care to ensure they are
getting the best deal for their money. Inquire about whether the provider has a minimum
purchase requirement. Find out how responsive the company is to inquires and design
requests. Also ask about the company’s testing procedures and whether they guarantee their
work.
By making an informed decision about whether custom cable assemblies are right for their
companies, business owners and executives can make the right move from a product safety
and quality standpoint as well as a financial one.
