Set ground rules

• If there aren’t any ground rules on kindness and civility in your workplace, they might be necessary!

• Ask your employees for their input, and see what they want from their workplace

Lead by !example

• Even if you set ground rules, nobody will take them seriously if you don’t practice what you preach!

• Discipline “mean” behavior to set an example for your employees

Be fair and communicate well

• Make sure your decisions are fair and balanced !

• Employees want to know what’s going on at work, so make sure you explain the “why”, otherwise they’ll start to fill in the blanks themselves

Make time for your employees • Employee

morale will plummet if they don’t think their company cares about them !

• Try and aim for short, weekly one-on-one meetings to touch base

Mix up the cliques• When office cliques start to

develop mix things up!• Change seating!• Look for ways to pair

employees who typically don’t interact with each other

Hire for !fit, not !just !skill

• If an applicant is extremely qualified but also a complete jerk, then you don’t want to work with them!

• Jerks ruin things for everybody!• You can often tell during an

interview if somebody is going to be a jerk
