GREEN MATTERSTheir endeavours towards environment protection are soil and water conservation programmes and extensive tree plantation drives. Tata Motors is committed to restoring and preserving environmental balance, by reducing waste and pollutants, conserving resources and recycling materials.The Company uses some of the world's most advanced equipment for emission check and control.Tata Motors has been making conscious effort in the implementation of several environmentally sensitive technologies in manufacturing processes.

Reducing pollutionTata Motors has been at the forefront of the Indian automobile industry's anti-pollution efforts by introducing cleaner engines.Tata Motors' joint venture with Cummins Engine Company, USA, in 1992, was a pioneering effort to introduce emission control technology for India.

Cont..Tata Motors has upgraded the performance of its entire range of four and six cylinder engines to meet international emission standards, accomplished with the help of world-renowned engine consultants like Ricardo and AVL.It has manufactured CNG version of buses and followed it up with a CNG version of its passenger car, the Indica.

Restoring ecological balanceTata Motors has set up effluent treatment facilities in its plants, to avoid release of polluted water into the ecosystem.In Pune, the treated water is conserved in lakes attracting various species of birds from around the world thus turning the space into a green belt.Tree plantation programmes involving villagers and Tata Motors employees, have turned acres of barren village green.

Cont..Tata Motors has planted as many as 80,000 trees in the works and the township and more than 2.4 million trees have been planted in Jamshedpur region.

Over half a million trees have been planted in the Poona region.

Community developmentThe Company's Community Service Division works through various societies to improve the conditions of neighbouring villages Encouraging economic independence through self-initiated cottage industries and contributing to community and social forestry, road construction, rural health, education, water supply and family planning.

Health and sanitationMobile health service staff provide preventive and curative health services under the "Health For All" programme.They train village health workers in conducting the same.Safe drinking water facilities are provided to ensure health of the villagers.

Employment generationEmployees' relatives at Pune have been encouraged to form various industrial co-operatives engaged in activities such as re-cycling of scrap wood into crates and furniture, welding, steel scrap baling, battery cable assembly etc.The Tata Motors Grihini Social Welfare Society caters to employees' women dependents'. The women folk make a variety of products, ranging from pickles and uniforms to electrical cable harnesses etc.

Community centersThese centres are situated in various parts of Jamshedpur, Pune and some of their neighbouring towns.

• To respond to the high number of leprosy infection in Jharkhand, Nav Jagrat Manav Samaj (NJMS) was established in 1981 as a front-end society of Tata Motors, Jamshedpur Plant. NJMS takes care of the lepers, maintains a hospital for the infected patients and an elderly home for the aged without family.

The Lakehouse, the eco-lake of Pune Plant is renowned for its natural beauty & the numerous species of migratory birds, the Lakehouse is totally man-made by the founders of the Pune Plant with a vision to create a green environment amidst a barren land, Water from the lakes and the ponds are entirely supplied with processed water from Pune Plant’s effluent treatment system. Apart from preventing the harm of improper industrial waste disposal.

SAKWAR PROJECT FOR TRIBAL YOUTH

• SAKWAR is a tribal region located in the Thane District, Maharashtra.

• Ramakrishna Mission, an NGO working in the region, is involved in the rehabilitation of the tribal population and in this capacity provides medical aid, primary education, progressive cultivation and trade courses like Electric Wireman, Carpentry and Tailoring.

• The first team from Tata Motors visited Sakwar in September 2002 to do a feasibility study and accordingly design a training module.

• Sakwar falls on the Mumbai-Ahmadabad Highway, there is ample scope for setting up repair and maintenance shops for the enroute traffic.

• Mechanic Motor Vehicle (MMV) Trade Course was to gear youth from in and around the region.

• While most students are absorbed by our dealers, 13 have opened their own garage and repair shops, thereby becoming entrepreneurs.

• Average turnover of these garages has exceeded Rs. 50,000p.m. in some cases.

• Sakwar project has been successful owing to the unrelenting commitment of TATA’s employee volunteers, who not only take guest lectures on technical aspects but also mentor these students.

IMPACT OF OTHER INITIATIVES OF TATA MOTOR’S AFFIRMATIVE ACTIONS PROGRAMME IN 2008-09

• Carts for Rag Pickers• Encouraging Employment: a central

government aided programme meant for socio-economic upliftment of SC/ST population, 2 new ponds were added to the existing 10 ponds during the year. Total work generated in the project this year was 2000 man days, benefiting 52 tribal families.

• Vocational Training: 58 SC/ST youth trained in computers and mushroom cultivation, of which 44 were women belonging to scheduled tribes during summer. Of these, 3 women found employment as computer teachers and as computer operator after having received computer training organised by the Company at Jamshedpur.

• Established by the late Mr. K. C. Mahindra in 1953, the K. C. Mahindra Education Trust aims to ‘Transform the lives of people in India through education, by providing financial assistance and recognition to them, across age groups and across income strata'. It was registered as a Public Charitable Trust under the Bombay Public Trusts Act, 1950.

• The Trust promotes education mainly by way of scholarships. It has provided more than Rs. 13.80 crores (approximately US $ 3.0 million) in the form of grants, scholarships and loans.

• The Mahindra Group has established schools near its factories primarily for children of its employees.

Health and disaster relief• The Mahindra Foundation has been set up with a specific

objective: To provide medical relief to the poor and needy sections of society. The foundation has helped patients suffering from cancer, heart ailments as well as burn victims. It has also been very active during national calamities and disasters and has helped contribute and mobilise resources. The foundation also extends its support to academia and other professionals and sportsmen by helping them attend workshops and conferences overseas.

• Esops here stands for Employee Social Options, a systematic employee-volunteering Programme under CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility). Esops, started in 2005 is a set of social work volunteering options that are created and implemented exclusively by employees themselves based on the needs of underprivileged communities in and around their areas of operation

• “Esops” enables Mahindra workforce to collectively donate thousands of human hours for various social projects, in the three focused areas of Education, Health and Environment, making social work an integral part of their lives.
