/ Consumer Speak (India):

Gurpreet discussed his desire to turn on the airconditioning remotely to prepare the home for hisarrival.

Ravi’s wife is concerned with water quality, airquality and health but has no way to gauge realhealth threats to her family.

Sudanshu wished he had a way to remotelycontrol the locks and monitor his home.

THEME: PROVIDE INFORMED CONTROL

Home controls like air conditioning, thermostats, ceiling fans, security systems, appliances and lighting are decentralized and scattered throughout the home. People expressed a desire to have greater control, security, convenience and understanding, particularly while away from the home and where it helped them to save money and live more healthily.

CONSUMER STORIES

/ Consumer Speak (India):

Gurpreet has a card-based switch mechanisminstalled in his house that turns off all lights, like in hotel rooms.

Ravi switched on and off his laptop and peripheral devices using a powerstrip.

Rashmi wanted to save money on her energy bill but had little understanding of how different usage behaviors contributed to the cost.

THEME: SMART CONSUMPTION

People view energy is a precious commodity and strive to save energy – and money – wheneverpossible. Yet they lack useful information about their home energy use and expressed a desire to bemore informed about how their appliances and devices are contributing to their energy bill - so theycan consume better. Devices are rarely left on when not in use.

CONSUMER STORIES

/ Summary (India Immersions - ~5 DIs)

• People reacted positively in parts to the concept• Ability to view energy consumption in a single snapshot was seen to be of most value• Security features did not seem that attractive (most had watchmen guarding their home complexes)• Some of the respondents expressed apprehension about how the technology would work with existing appliances – no one seemed interested to buy additional components• Couple expressed concerns if the installation procedure would be complicated, as they had newly done houses• One of the respondents expressed that there may be a lack of reason to believe that the data being reported is actually accurate• Few suggested that the product should also clearly recommend optimum usage, as there is no point in just stating the problem

/ Consumer Speak (Philippines):20 years old. Male student, stays in an on-campus housing.

- The product is okay. I see the value in being able to know my consumption. I will buy it. - Make it more user-friendly. The consulting part may affect user-friendliness. - Removing third-party consulting services will save you money and time. I think you don't need someone else for support services. - The security feature is somewhat far from the other features. It is far from the need that you want to address which is saving money. - Security feature can be a selling point. - Controlling energy consumption is very complicated. If a sensor will be used to switch off a device, that sensor is not related to your product. You can bundle them together but they are not related. - You can add or remove features depending on segment.

20 years old. female. currently undergrad . She lives here in the city with her parents

- The product will appeal more to businesses than households. Electric bill might not be a priority in households.- Benefits will be more obvious to businesses than households. - Make it more passive for the user. Users might not have the motivation to use the device on a daily basis. I do not think I am motivated enough to look and use this device on a daily basis. - It might be difficult for a person to adapt to this device. - I think gamification can help users gain more motivation. - Mobile app updates/alerts is a very helpful feature. It makes the experience more passive for the user.

/ Summary (Philippines Immersions - ~2 DIs)

• Value of being able to know energy consumption data was clear to the interviewees and they want that feature. • This feature seems to have the highest impact for both interviewees. • And based from their comments, there is not much emphasis on other features which are security, control and management. • We need to make the device less demanding for a more passive experience for users.
