Role of Landscape Architect

Landscape Architect is the profession that designs, plans and manages the land and its resources. They create the landscape around us. They plan, design and manage open spaces including both natural and built environments. They work to provide innovative and aesthetically pleasing environments for people to enjoy, whilst ensuring that changes to the natural environment are appropriate, sensitive and sustainable. The work covers diverse projects - both urban and rural - that range from designing the layout of parks, gardens and housing estates to city-centre design, sporting sites and improving land affected by mining or motorway construction. A landscape architect collaborates closely with landscape contractors, as well as other professionals, especially architects, town planners, environmentalists and people working in surveying and engineering functions.

Process of work

1. Consultation – the landscape architect will first meet the client and understand what the client wants, understand the project.

2. Design Proposal – On or before the deadline for the proposal, the landscape architect will meet the client again to present the proposal to complete the project. The proposal will contain

• 1  Introduction letter with an executive summary of the proposal.• 2  A list of the scope of services required to properly execute the project. For

example some projects may require a topographical survey to be performed as part of a site inventory phase, while other projects may not need such detailed inventory.  See a full list of possible services the landscape architect can provide on the services page.

• 3  A design intent statement, describing their artistic goals and opinions about possibilities for the client’s commission.

• 4  A timeline of completion for each phase of work, including any predictable meetings with the client that will need to occur during the project.

• 5  A pay schedule detailing when and the amount attributed to each phase of work completed will be expected.

3. The Site Analysis – The landscape architect will then go to the project site and identify the physical attributes and limitations of the site.

4. Concept Design Phase – Based on the result and information from the site analysis, the landscape architect will design and develop few options of schematic design of the project and submit to the client for review and approval.

5. Design Development Phase – Based on the Schematic Design or concept approved by the client, the landscape architect will refine and sufficiently detail the proposed form of the improvements to fully convey the design intent. The plans will then submitted to the client for review and approval.

6. Construction Document Phase - Based on the Client-approved Design Development phase submission, the landscape architect will then prepare Construction Documents suitable for bidding or contract negotiations and for the construction of the project. The landscape plan may include the Demolition plan, layout plan, drainage plan, irrigation plan, planting plan, furnishings plan, lighting plan and the signage plan.

7. The Bidding Phase – The landscape Architect will assist the client during the bidding process to identify the contractor to construct the Project and establish the firm price to accomplish the work.

8. Contract Negotiation Phase - When contracts are negotiated, the Landscape Architect shall assist the Client during the contract negotiation process to establish contract terms for the construction of the Project.

9. Construction Contract Administration Services – The landscape Architect will then take part in the pre-construction conference, undertake periodic observation of the work in progress for conformance with the Construction Documents, evaluate the completed work, review and approve the contractor progress payment requests and the final application for payment and recommend the acceptance of the project by the client.
