Your increasingly complex IP strategy needs…

•! The IP Intelligence needs of large organisations are becoming increasingly complex

•! Traditional approach to IP analysis (mainly focused to satisfying FTO needs) is increasingly inadequate

MEMS for Energy Scavenging: preliminary results

CambridgeIP has teamed up with MEMS expert Henne van Heeren to produce a report for the IPMKTN on recent MEMS patents.

!! The report, due to be published soon, will augment the IPMKTN's report titled "MEMS Recent Developments, Future Directions”

!! An area of special focus in the report is MEMS technologies for Energy Scavenging.

The next several slides summarise preliminary findings, which should not be relied upon for any purpose or to make or refrain from making any decision.

Our Deliverables contain data extracted from publicly available sources, such as patent data from Patent Offices’ databases. We accept no liability for the accuracy or completeness of the data provided to us from such sources.

Patent applications may be unpublished for 18+ months. Therefore the number of reported patents for the last 2 years may be under-represented.

Around 13% of patents originate from Universities or Research Institutes with the balance from companies.

The most popular three technologies disclosed in the patents are -! Magnetic/coil 30% -! Piezoelectric 12% -! Thermal 10%

Fully 40% of patents use vibration as a source of energy.

Advanced Analytics: Assignee & Inventor Network Analysis

!! Using patent datasets we conduct deep level analysis to understand a

technology space’s innovator networks

!! Visualising ‘deep’ networks reveals information that is difficult to ‘see’ otherwise

!! This type of research can help you identify

!! Licensing candidates

!! Most likely trade buyers of a company and/or competitors

!! Collaboration and hiring opportunities Level 5: ‘Friends’ friends’4

Level 1 : Innovators in Assignee’s IP Portfolio

Advanced Analytics: Technology Evolution Maps

!! These analyses help clients understand technology diffusion and migration patterns and identify early-on technology hotspots

!! Such information can be used to identify new uses of existing capabilities, or to support R&D planning

Case Studies 1

!! Technology start-up: Freedom to operate analysis & key player identification

!! Within 72 hours of order, we provided the client with our Patent Ranking report which the client used for a freedom to operate analysis. In addition, the client identified little known areas of application of his technology, and improved his understanding of who the key inventors and assignees in the space.

Case Studies 2

!! University spin-off: Competitor strategy analysis using patent-based intelligence !! A top UK University spin-out active in the Renewable Energy field approached us for an IP Landscape report. The CEO of a company in Renewable Energy space required deep intelligence about industry incumbents’ R&D strategy. We also provided independent analysis of the industry’s patent landscape for use in technology licensing negotiations and structuring a strategic partnership.

Case studies 3

!! Individual inventor: cost effective support for freedom to operate analysis and patent drafting strategy !! A world-leading surgeon approached CambridgeIP. The client was at the point of drafting a patent for a new surgical device. He needed to identify potential conflicting patents with his inventions, in order to avoid patent infringement. In addition, he sought to investigate patented materials and methods used by other surgical device applications.

Case Studies 4

!! Major Technology Consultancy: Patent Licensing and Acquisition Strategy for a Fortune 100 Corporation !! A leading UK technology consultancy was approached by a Fortune 100

company to identify acquisition and patent licensing opportunities in a major medical instrumentation area. The project brief was intentionally vague: focusing on user benefits, leaving the question of technology open-ended. The consultancy faced a tight timeline in which to develop a patent map of the field and make recommendations. CambridgeIP embedded an executive with the client to ensure rapid implementation of feedback.

Case Studies 5

!! Blue chip R&D manager: cost effective R&D strategy development

!! Our client had a deep understanding of her sector. However, prior to structuring her corporation’s R&D approach and commitment to investment, she wanted to develop a deeper and independent understanding of the field: key actors, relationships, levels of activity, key patents.

!! The patent-based Technology Evolution Map we developed helped identify new areas of growth and entry points.
