Drones
Having evolved over the last about seven decades, today’s Unmanned Aerial Vehicles or UAVs also known as drones are amazing flying vehicles. These are either controlled by operators from the ground or simply follow a pre-programmed mission. There are dozens of diverse drones today. However, broadly one can classify them into two major categories. The first of these categories consists of those drones that are used mainly for peaceful and civil-oriented tasks including reconnaissance and surveillance while the second is more oriented towards a military role and are normally armed with bombs and missiles. The drone today is used extensively for providing visual information and data in real time.
This event could be that of an earthquake or a hurricane. It can also be a search mission to seek out a child, a hiker or biker or a group of trekkers lost in a landslide or avalanche. These are primarily Search & Rescue (SAR) missions that provide excellent information and imagery in real-time so that decision making becomes easy and more accurate. One of the recent uses of the UAV is in the role of an emergency drone.
Emergency Drone
A very large number of people suffer cardiac arrests all over the world each year. The survival rate is a pitiful under 10%.
Perhaps the major reason for this low survival rate is the long period required for the emergency services to respond. This period could be 10 minutes in the well organized cities and more in cities that are congested. However, fatalities and brain death take place in around 5 minutes.
The emergency drone carries a defibrillator to the patient within a zone of around 12km in less than a minute. This kind of response improves the chances of cardiac arrest to around 80%.
Aerial Ambulance
The role of the emergency drone is that of an aerial ambulance with a difference. These drones will be stationed all over a city at vantage locations. When in an emergency, normal people on the scene can call the drone in. The defibrillator unit is user-friendly and just anyone can use it. Doctors can monitor the situation once the shocks are applied and the patient recovers.
