I. Mains supply voltage

Take the projector out of its case and check that the operating switch 20is on "Stop."

Before commencing operations, it is necessary to find out the voltage ofthe local mains supply. As a rule, this voltage is already known. If this is not the case, the electriclight bulb in the room in which the projector is to be used should beunscrewed; the mains voltage will usually be found marked somewhereon the bulb, in volts (or "V"). A better method is to examine the nearestelectric light meter, on which precise information about the type ofcurrent supplied-which will be either alternating (A.C. or ~) or direct(D.C. or = )-and the mains voltage (in volts) will be found.

However, the best way of checkingthe mains voltage is to use a voltmeter, as this has the added advantageof keeping the operator informed aboutany fluctuations in the mains supplywhich might affect the running of theprojector. The Motor 15 is of the "universal" type and can run on any mainswhose frequency is comprised betweeno and 60 periods/sec.

M8If the mains voltage does not exceed125 volts, Model M8 projectors can beconnected directly to the mains supply,no matter whether the cu rrent isalternating or direct. If the mainsvoltage is higher than 125 volts, anauxiliary transformer (A.C. only) orresistance (A.C. or D.C.) must be usedbetween the mains supply and plug 16.

Three-conductor flex

The power-input socket (2) can be connected toa three-phase attachment plug (grounding). Onrequest, the Paillard-Bolex Agent or your BolexDealer will supply a three-conductor flex and aspecial pin. This latter should be screwed into thehole "0" of the socket (see fig.).

In countries where grounding is advisable, use theth ree-cond uctor flex.

550 watts500 watts

M8RThis model can be connected to any Iof the mains supply voltages shown onthe voltage selector 25, no matter wheth-er the current is alternating or direct.Having ascertained the mains voltage, unscrew the small plug on the panelof the voltage divider and insert it inthe hole opposite the number cor- 1,/1'Iresponding to the mains voltage.E.g. : The position of the plug cor

responds to a mains voltage of125 V.

FusesBefore connecting up the projector, inspect the fuses in the projectionroom's mains supply circuit and check that their rating is high enoughto withstand the current taken by the projector.

M8When fitted with a 500-watt lamp, the projector consumes 550 VA, i.e.approximately 550 watts of electrical power. If the projector is the onlyapparatus drawing power from the circuit,· a fuse with a rating of at least6 amperes will be sufficient. However, if any other apparatuses or lights remain switched on whilethe projector is in use, the additional current drawn by them will haveto be taken into account in calculating the fuse rating.

E.g. : Voltage of mains supply 110 volts.Power taken by M8 projectors 550 VA, or approx.Power taken by other apparatuses in circuit.

Total power consumed. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1050 watts

The fuses fitted should have a minimum rating at least as high as the valueobtained when the total power consumed is divided by the mains supplyvoltage. In the example just quoted, a 10-ampere fuse would be required(1050 divided by 110).

M8RThe minimum fuse rating can be calculated in the same way as in the caseof the M8 projector. The only alterations that must be taken into account are those that affectthe mains supply voltage and the projector's power consumption.

E.g. : Voltage of mains supply 220 volts.Total power consumed 1100 VA, or about 1100 watts. The minimum fuse rating should be at least 5 amperes (1100 dividedby 220). In this case, a standard 6-ampere fuse would prove sufficient.

II. Setting up the projector

The operati ng switch 20 shou Id be on"Stop."

Open up hinged panel 21, and check thata projection lam p is fitted and in the correctposition. To do the latter, turn the projectionlamp in the direction shown by the arrow. The flanges on the lamp base 22 shouldtouch the stops in the lamp-holder socket. The projector can either be stood on atable or on its carrying case, or it can beset up on the special Paillard Bolex tripodstand for cine projectors.

Centeringthe projection imageon the screen

a) Projector set up on table orcarrying case :

The projection beam may be aimed in ahorizontal direction, or it may be pointedupwards or downwards~ Connect the projector to the power supply, and set theoperating switch to position c (motor running and projection lamp lit-see generalview). An image of the aperture in thegate will appear on the screen. Bring thisimage into focus by turning the focussing'ring 8 on the lens. Use the speed control knob 23 to adjust the motor speed soas to eliminate any trace of flicker on thescreen. Center up the image of the gateaperture in the middle of the screen, byturning knobs 10 and 14.Reset the operating switch to "Stop."

4

Page 11: Bolex projector-m8-m8 r-user-manual

b) Projector set up on PAILLARDBOLEX Projector Stand

Let down the projector's front feet about15 mm (3/5"). Place the projector on platform of tripod, taking care that its feetslide into the appropriate depressions.Fasten the projector into position byscrewing the knobs down hard. Figure 7shows the projector pointed downwards.Figure B shows the projector pointedupwards. To render the projection beamhorizontal, turn screw d on the tripod.

Set the operating switch to position c, focus the image of the gateaperture on the screen by turning the focussing ring on the lens, adjustthe motor speed to eliminate flicker on the screen, and center up theimage on the screen by means of the tripod screw. Return operating switch20 to "Stop."

The projection beam must be directed perpendicularly at the screen, whatever the type of stand in use.

Installing a table or standard lamp, etc. There is no need to make any provision for lighting the mechanism orcontrols while a film is being shown, as the film transport mechanism isvery simply designed, and the operating controls and stopping device arewithin easy reach. The universal mains outlet 17 fitted to the projector isintended to supply an auxiliary room light (such as a table light or standardlamp) of the same voltage as the mains supply to which the projector isconnected. However the power in watts consumed by the lamp should not be greaterthan the mains supply voltage.

E.g. : Model MB-125 V- 125 watts maximum.Model M8R-220 V-220 watts maximum, and so on.

The auxiliary lamp is extinguished automatically when the projectionlamp is switched on.If the operator wishes to be able to dim the room lighting gradually at thebeginning of a show, he should insert a variable resistance or "dimmer"of the appropriate rating in the auxiliary lighting circuit. Correct operatingprocedure in this case is first to dim the room lighting by moving the slideron the dimmer resistance, then to set the projector running and showthe fil m. At the end of the reel the same operations shou Id be repeatedin the reverse order.

III. Loadin

oRaise up the upper spool arm 11 intotheerect position by carrying out movements e and f simultaneously.

Place the full spool on the upper spoolspindle. The film unwinds in the direction shown by the arrow, with theperforations on the same side as theslotted spindle tip that keeps the spoolin place.

Open the film gate by swinging thelens-holder forwards on its hinges.

Place the empty spool on the back(take-up) spindle 18 and unwind about30" of film.

Insert the film between the uppersprocket guides 2 by pulling it slightlyin an upwardly direction. If thesprocket teeth do not enter the filmperforations immediately, pull the filmforwards a little. A slight click tellswhen the film is in place.

g the film

Form the upper loop, and pass the filmbetween the guides 1 and 4 at the gate.

.,Hold the film in this position and bringthe lens-holder back into place gently.

Place the left index finger just underthe automatic loop-former 5 and formthe lower loop, then guide the filmover the lower sprocket guides 7with the right hand, and pull on itslightly in the direction shown by thearrow. The upper and lower loopsshould be roughly the same size.

Pass the film under guide-rollers 9 and3 and fasten the free end to the coreof the empty take-up spool. Turn thelatter 'in a clockwise direction so asto tighten up the film slightly.

IV. Projecting

Both models M8 and M8R are fitted with

a special safety device (centrifugal con

tactor) which prevents the projection

rate from falling below the minimum

necessary to ensure adequate ventilation.

When the projection rate falls below

12 frames per second, the motor speed

starts to oscillate up and down, and the

centrifugal contactor becomes noisy.

If this occurs, increase the projection

rate by turning knob 23.

Set the motol" and film transport mechanism running by placing theoperating switch 20 on position b (see general view).

Now turn the switch to position c. This switches on the projectionlamp and turns off the auxiliary room lighting.

Using the speed control knob 23, adjust the projection rate so as toeliminate any trace of flicker on the screen.

Bring the picture into focus by turning the focussing ring on the projectionlens 8.

Check that the picture is properly centered on the screen, and adjustframing if necessary by turning, knob 12.

End of the reel

To switch off the projection lamp and turn on the room lighting, whilekeeping the motor running at the same time, simply move the operatingswitch from c to b.To stop the projector completely (motor and lamp), simply press on the

operating switch as you would on a bellpush. The auxiliary room lighting willlight up automatically.

Instantaneous stopping device

To bring the projector to an immediatestop, press on the operating switch asdescribed in the preceding paragraph.

V. Rewinding-whether by hand or using the motor-must always becarried out with the lens-holder in the "closed" position.

Manual rewind

1. Screw the rewinding handle intothe upper spool arm.

2. Take hold of the free end of the film, and fasten it to the core of the upperspool (now empty), following thepath shown.

3. Rewind the film by turning thehandle in the direction shown bythe arrow.

Motor rewind

1. Fix the spring belt into place asshown (Fig. 20). Take hold of thefree end of the film and fasten it tothe core of the upper spool, following the path shown.

2. Set knob 23 nearly to minimum speed.

3. Set the operating switch on position b.

4. Engage the rewinding mechanism,by pressing on the grooved rewinding knob 13.

5. When all the film has been woundback, stop the projector by pushingon the operating switch.

IV

VII

Page 16: Bolex projector-m8-m8 r-user-manual

VI. Changing the projection lamp

Open the combined panel and lampmount 21, press down on the lamp andturn it a quarter-turn in the directionshown by the arrow. Remove thelamp, and put in a new one by carryingout the same operations in the reverseorder (when inserting the new lamp, see that the flanges on its base areopposite the corresponding gaps in thelamp-holder socket). The standardized projection lamps nowon the market are practically inter

changeable, so that no readjustments will be necessary when the lampis changed. To ensure a maximum life of the lamp, the lamp-holder socketis fixed on shock-absorbing elastic stands.

VII. U pl<eep

Never use any metal tool or other metallic object for cleaning theprojector.

Lubrication

After every 25 hours of use the projector should be lubricated by introducing 3 or 4 drops of high-gradesewing-machine oil into the lubricatingducts, which are marked in red, atthe same time letting the motor runvery slowly. Duct i lubricates thecentral part of the mechanism, andducts hand k lubricate the upperspool spindle and the motor.

Cleaning

Optical equipment: Using a dry, clean paintbrush with fine soft hairs, removeall dust from the lens, the reflecting mirror next to the projection lamp, and the glass screen 24 of the catathermic filter. Then clean all the glasssu rfaces with a clean, dry chamois-leather cloth.

Pressure-pad (on lens-holder) and gate These two parts, which are veryeasy to get at, should be cleaned fairly often to remove any deposits of

10

Page 17: Bolex projector-m8-m8 r-user-manual

emulsion or dust which may accumulate. A soft, dry rag can be used forthis purpose.Check that the gate aperture is free from any particles of foreign matterby inspecting its image on the screen.

Sprockets and rollers: Any deposit of dust or emulsion that collects onthe sprockets, film guides or rollers may cause scoring of the film. Althoughthe M8's sprockets and guide rollers have been designed expressly toprevent the possibility of such damage occurring, by avoiding all contactwith the exposed portion of the fi 1m, these components should nevertheless be cleaned regularly. Deposits of emulsion are more likely to occurwhen freshly-developed films are being shown.
