leadership to improve student learning and teacher evaluation. Initiated programs in the arts, service-learning, multi-age classrooms, special education inclusion, project-based learning, technology-based learning, parent involvement and student enrichment.

1989-1992 Director, University of Maine Aspirations Project. Developed and lead

the University of Maine Aspirations Project, designed to promote critical thinking, participation, leadership, post-secondary attendance, and improve life chances for Maine students. The focus was on student leadership to promote dialogue about schooling and educational practices that reduced barriers to student motivation and success.

Research and Consulting Experience 2013-2014 Lead Investigator, The Effects of Effective English and Spanish

Literacy Instruction on Student Literacy Development Among Students in A Two-Way Bilingual Immersion Program . Designed and in the process of implementing a year-long study for Benchmark Education, Inc., of the effects of the Benchmark English and Spanish Literacy Program on students' English and Spanish academic achievement who are participants in a Two-Way Spanish English Immersion program in Reston VA.

2012-2013 Lead Investigator, The Effects of Effective Literacy Instruction on

Student Literacy Development. Designed and implemented a year-long study for Benchmark Education, Inc., of the effects of the Benchmark literacy Program on student academic achievement in Reston, VA .

2011-2012 Lead Investigator, The Effects of Effective Literacy Instruction on Student Literacy Development. Designed and implemented a year-long, six-school, experimental study for Benchmark Education, Inc., in the Fort Smith, AR public schools and Fairfax, VA Public Schools.

2009- 2010 Lead Investigator, The Effects of School Climate on Student Academic

Performance. Funded by a grant from the TN Dept of Education and Sullivan County Public Schools, a team of investigators from New England College and the University of Massachusetts conducted a 30 school study of the effects of the SafeMeasures™ Process on school climate and student academic achievement between 2003 and 2006.

2009 National School Climate Standards Equity Review Session, Brown

University, Co-Sponsored by the New England Equity Assistance Center and New England College. Over 30 educational equity experts from New England met to evaluate and provide feedback on the newly developed National School Climate Standards.

2008-2011 Education and Development Consultant. Worked with Retrieve

Technologies, Inc. assisting in the design of a virtual instructional platform for providing professional development and training to teachers and other professionals using interactive, video-based instructional and innovative performance-based assessment tools.

2009- 2010 Program Developer, Expanding Extended Learning Opportunities

(ELO) Through Student Leadership. Designed and implemented a project in collaboration with Plus Time NH, the NH Dept of Education, the Nellie May Foundation, and the Franklin Public Schools to empower student leaders to expand the use of ELOs.

2008-2009 Lead Investigator, Evaluating the Uses and Effects of SMART Boards.

Worked in Sullivan County, TN Public Schools to design and implement an evaluation of ways teachers used SMART boards and the effects of these instructional tools on student motivation, learning, and classroom climate.

2008-2009 Lead Investigator, The Effects of Differentiated Instruction on Student

Literacy Development. Designed and implemented a year-long, six-school, experimental study for Benchmark Education, Inc., in the East Hartford Public Schools, E. Hartford, CT.

2004-2009 Program Developer, APEX II –NH Dropout Prevention Program.

Worked with the University of New Hampshire’s Institute on Disability and the Alliance for Community Supports to provide technical assistance to ten NH high schools that had the highest dropout rates.

2002-2010 Research and Evaluation Consultant, School Climate in Sullivan County Public Schools, Sullivan County, Tennessee. Worked with the U.S. Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division to evaluate school climate and safety for minority students and to document progress made toward eliminating racism and harassment of targeted students in thirty Sullivan County K-12 schools.

2005-2008 Program Evaluator, 21st Century Community Learning Centers

Program Evaluation. Evaluated the effectiveness of The Community Association of Progressive Dominicans’s (ACDP’s) 21st Century after school programs in three inner-city elementary and middle schools and three high schools in Harlem, Upper Manhattan, and Washington Heights, NY.

2005-2007 Lead Investigator, Benchmark Literacy Research. Developed and

implemented an experimental study of the effects of Benchmark Education’s leveled readers and differentiated instruction training on literacy development of 3rd through 5th grade students in six schools in Tyler, TX.

2004- 2008 Advisory Board Member, NH Coalition of Essential Schools, Antioch

New England College, Keene, NH. The boards role is to guide the implementation of the principles of the CES in NH schools.

2004-2005 Program Evaluator, Effects of Math Line on Math Achievement.

Worked with colleagues from New England College and Main Street Academix to develop and implement an experimental study of the effects of this hands-on, manipulative-based math program on student achievement in mathematics.

2004-2005 Program Evaluator, Effects of Master Ruler on Students’ Mathematics

Achievement. Developed and implemented an experimental program evaluation for Master Innovations, a mathematics education publisher from Alpha, New Jersey.

2004-2005 Program Evaluator, Arts Education Evaluation Project. Developed a

program evaluation for the NH Department of Education’s arts-integration leadership program (SAIL). The design was distributed nationally to arts educators by the NH DOE.

2003- 2006 Advisory Board Member, CARE NH and NH PBIS Family and Youth

Engagement Partnership. Worked with leaders of the NH Dept of Education, Child and Family Services, NAMI of NH, the Parent Information Center to include youth and families as leaders in all future state-funded initiatives.

2004-2005 Design Team Member. The Integrated Learning - Arts Integration Committee, New Hampshire Department of Education. Worked to identify current challenges affecting integrated arts education, including the education of students with disabilities. Developed a set of best practices and disseminated these statewide for use in NH schools.

2003-2004 NH Department of Education, Social Studies Standards Revision

Committee. Served as Chair of the Geography Committee and as a member of the Policy Committee to make revisions to the NH Social Studies Curriculum Standards.

2003-2004 Research and Evaluation Consultant, Amber Charter School, East

Harlem, NY. Worked as a partner with this inner-city elementary school to evaluate school safety and climate and the impact of urban poverty, recent immigration status, and international terrorism on students’ perceptions of safety. This work led to the development of a comprehensive school safety plan for Amber Charter.

2000-2004 Lewiston High School Peer Leaders Project Evaluation. Developed

and implemented a longitudinal study of the effects of a Peer Leaders Program initiated by the University of Southern Maine’s Center for the Prevention of Hate Violence on students’ attitudes and behavior, racism, harassment, and school climate following the influx of hundreds of Somali families into Lewiston, Maine.

2003-2004 Research and Evaluation Consultant, Integrated Day Charter School, Respectful Teaching Research Project. Evaluated the impact of

constructivist pedagogy, service learning, and the use of other progressive pedagogical techniques on student safety and school climate in an ethnically diverse urban school.

2003-2004 Research and Evaluation Consultant, Epping Middle School and

Brentwood School. Evaluated the impact of arts integration on student learning and school climate with particular attention to the experiences of students who have special behavioral and learning needs.

1999-2003 Founder, New Hampshire Best Schools Student Leadership Initiative.

MSA worked with the NH Department of Education, NH Public Television, Measured Progress, and the NH Teen Institute to design and implement a state-wide student leadership program as part of the NH Best Schools Leadership Initiative.

1998-2000 Evaluator, Maine Civil Rights Teams (MCRT) Project, Maine

Department of the Attorney General. Developed and implemented a two year evaluation of the effects of the MCRT Project in 154 Maine schools. This project lead to the development of the SafeMeasures™

School Climate Improvement Process. Results of the study were presented to the Justice Department Office of Justice Assistance and were published in our first book, The Respectful School (2003) published by ASCD.

Grants and Project Funding Over the past 10 years, I have successfully applied for, been awarded, or been funded by numerous state, federal, and local grants. Other funding for research and youth leadership projects have come through educational publishers, from local schools, and from a variety of state, federal, and regional sources. The technology, literacy and mathematics research projects we have been involved in have been privately funded by various educational publishers and program developers. 2013-2014 Main Street Academix designed and is in the process of implementing a

year-long study for Benchmark Education, Inc., of the effects of the Benchmark English and Spanish Literacy Program on students' English and Spanish academic achievement who are participants in a Two-Way Spanish English Immersion program in Reston VA.

2012-2013 The Center for School Climate and Learning received a contract from

Benchmark Education, Inc. to design and implement a year-long study of the effects of the Benchmark Literacy Program on student academic achievement in Reston, VA .

2011-2012 The Center for School Climate and Learning received funding from

Benchmark Education, Inc. to design and implement a six-school experimental study of the effects of Benchmark’s literacy training and materials on student reading achievement. The one-year research study was done in collaboration with the Fort Smith, Arkansas Public Schools and Fairfax, VA Public Schools.

2010-2012 Main Street Academix was awarded a contract to work with the TN Office

of Safe and Drug Free Schools and its new Center for School Climate to provide technical assistance to a statewide cohort of school districts which comprise 20% of all students in Tennessee.

2008-2009 Main Street Academix received a grant to support our research on the

effects of school climate on student academic achievement from the TN Office of Safe and Drug Free Schools and the Sullivan County Public Schools.

2008-2009 Main Street Academix received a contract from Benchmark Education,

Inc. to design and implement a six-school experimental study of the effects of Benchmark’s literacy training and materials on teachers’ ability to differentiate instruction and on student reading ability. The one-year research study was done in collaboration with the University of Massachusetts and the East Hartford Public Schools.

2005-2008 Main Street Academix in collaboration with Sterner-Moscow Partnership

received a four year evaluation grant from the 21st Century School Project, to evaluate the effectiveness of The Community Association of Progressive Dominicans’s (ACDP’s) 21st Century Community Learning Centers Program. These programs are located in three inner city elementary and middle schools and three high schools in Harlem, Upper Manhattan, and Washington Heights, NY.

2005-2006 Main Street Academix received a contract from Benchmark Education,

Inc. to design and implement a six-school experimental study of the effects of Benchmark’s literacy training and materials on student reading comprehension, fluency, and phonemic awareness. The one-year research study was done in collaboration with the University of Massachusetts and the Tyler, Texas Public Schools.

2005 Main Street Academix, in collaboration with Plymouth State University,

received a grant to develop and implement a Summer Institute for NH teachers, administrators and student leaders called, Building The Respectful School, How to Improve School Climate to Help Our Most Challenging Students Succeed. The Institute was attended by over 120 students, administrators and NH teachers.

2004-2005 Main Street Academix received funding to support the evaluation of the

effects of two hands-on mathematics programs (MathLine and Master Ruler) on mathematics instruction and student learning.

2003-2007 Main Street Academix received funding from The Center for the

Prevention of Hate Violence and the Sullivan County Public Schools to conduct a longitudinal, pre-post assessment of school climate and safety in thirty-six schools in Tennessee.

2002-2003 Main Street Academix, and SAU #24 received a New Hampshire Safe and Drug Free Schools Grant to support a pilot project from NH Dept of Education/ US Department of Education to collect school climate data in third through twelfth grades in NH schools and to develop and implement student, faculty, and administrative programs based upon results to address problems of bullying, bias-based harassment, and violence.

1999- 2003 State of New Hampshire, Department of Education’s Best Schools

Leadership Initiative. We have received three annual grants from the NH DOE to support student leadership development in NH. Funds are used to design and implement state-wide student leadership Teen Summits. We have held six statewide summits offering leadership training and support for over 1,200 middle and high school student leaders from over fifty NH communities over three years.
