Childhood
Born October 28, 1955 to William H. Gates II & Mary Gates.
Grew up in Seattle, WA. 2 sisters- Kristi (older) and Libby (younger).
Father was a Seattle attorney Mother was a schoolteacher, University of Washington
regent, & chairman of United Way International.
School DaysEnrolled into Lakeside Prep at age 13 and
developed friendship with Paul Allen.As a baby, he was very smart child , full of
energy and bright student.Discovered computers (ARS-33).Wrote his first computer program in 8th grade.Graduated from Lakeside and registered at
Harvard College in the fall of 1973.SAT score: 1590 out of 1600.
Achievements
1. Inspiring the era of the home computer
During the late 1960s, Bill Gates and his school friend Paul Allen learnt the BASIC programming language whilst studying at Lakeside School in Seattle.
2. Commercialising the operating system
Gates and Allen founded Microsoft in 1976. In 1980, the company inked a landmark deal with IBM to produce an operating system for its up-and-coming personal computer (PC). Microsoft bought 86-DOS from Seattle Computer Products, a Disk Operating System designed for 8086-based computers.

When you look back at the career of Bill Gates, it's easy to focus on Microsoft's biggest product – Windows. You can now find versions of Windows on around 90 per cent of the world's computers.
4. Becoming the richest man in the world
Bill Gates became the richest man on the planet at the age of 39. He stayed at number one on the Forbes list of the World's Richest People until 2007.
5. Giving his money away
In 2006, Warren Buffet gifted $31 billion to the Foundation, which already had over $30 billion of Gates' own money in its coffers. In 2007 alone, the Foundation spent over $2 billion on global education and health initiatives.
College
Lived down the hall from Steve Ballmer his freshman year at Harvard. Steve is now Microsoft’s chief executive officer.
His sophomore year, he developed a solution to one of a series of unsolved problems that was later published in a paper with Harvard scientists.
Solution held record as the fastest version in over thirty years.
Gates and Allen teamead up and started
a company named Micro-soft, in 1975.Started off by developing a version of an early computer
language- Basic, later on they sold it to MITS( their first customer) for $3000.
In 1980’s Micro-soft became Microsoft.Later in 1980 microsoft acquired a small Operating system and
developed MS-DOS, licenced by IBM for its first PCOn June 25 1981, Bill Gates as Chairman and CEO.In 1983 Microsoft developed 1st Windows OS.On March 1986, with nearly 1400 employees and $200
revenues, Bill Gates became billionaire.
Career Path..
1994, married Melinda French in Hawaii.1995,The govt agreed to drop its antitrust
action.1998,profit $4.5 billion dollars,twice of
world’s next largest corporation i.e General Motors.
2000, The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation was established.
It has over $28.8 billion to support charitable initiatives in the areas of global health and education
