Microsoft’s Word application comes set with default settings of Grammar only; however, the application can be set for more extensive editing features with the setting of Grammar and Style Settings.
These features are invaluable when self-editing a paper, especially an APA 6th Edition paper.

Locating & Setting the Advanced Editing Features 1. From the Menu Bar, select
Tools > Options 2. From the New Window,
select the Spelling & Grammar Tab
3. From the Grammar section in this window, select Writing style, using the drop down arrow choose Grammar & Style
4. Click on the button titled Settings . . .

make sure that all the boxes are Checked under the Grammar section
6. From the same window make sure that all the boxes are Checked under the Style section

window, locate the Require section, for this is where you can set APA specific rules
8. Comma required before last list item: Select always from the drop down menu
9. Punctuation required with quotes: Select inside from the drop down menu
10. Spaces required between sentences: Select either 1 or 2, they both are right for APA 6th edition
11. Click on the OK button, click on the OK button on the Options window
Comma: Use a comma between elements (including before and and or) in a series of three or more items (APA, 2010, p. 88).
Chapter 4: Section 4.03 – Comma (p. 88)
Double or Single Quotation Marks with other punctuation: ―Place periods and commas within closing single or double quotation marks. Place other punctuation marks inside quotation marks only when they are part of the quoted material‖ (APA, 2010, p. 92).
Chapter 4: Section 4.08 – Double or Single Quotation Marks (p. 92)
Spacing After a Period: ―Spacing twice after punctuation marks at the end of a sentence aids readers of draft manuscripts‖ (APA, 2010, p. 88).
