DECIDING WHICH APPROACH TO USE
For QUANTITATIVE DATA analysis:
Issues of validity and reliability are important
Endeavour to show that the chosen methods succeed in measuring
Make sure that their measurements are stable and consistent and that there are no errors or bias present
For QUALITATIVE DATA analysis:
Acknowledge that participants are influenced by taking part in the research process
Acknowledge that researchers bring their own preferences and experience to the project
Some researchers criticize qualitative methods as unscientific or unreliable
QUALITATIVE DATA ANALYSIS
The important matters when analyzing of qualitative data
It is useful to produce an interview summary form or a focus group summary form
It is useful to complete these forms as soon as possible after the interview and attach them to your transcripts.
It is useful to complete these forms as soon as possible after the interview and attach them to your transcripts.
Qualitative data analysis is a very personal process, with few rigid rules and procedures.
QUALITATIVE DATA ANALYSIS
Formats of Analysis:
Different types of qualitative data analysis as positioned on a continuum:
QUALITATIVE DATA ANALYSIS
Processing the data:
There are different processes involved in qualitative data analysis:
You need to think about the data from the moment you start to collect the information.
You need to judge the value of your data, especially that which may come from dubious sources.
As your research progresses you need to interpret the data so that you, and others, can gain an understanding of what is going on.
Finally, you need to undertake the mechanical process of analyzing the data.
QUALITATIVE DATA ANALYSIS
Using computers for qualitative data analysis: advantages and disadvantages
Advantages
Helps to alleviate time-consuming and monotonous tasks
Useful aid to those who have to work to tight deadlines.
Different sequence of events cannot be recognized by a computer
Cannot understand the meaning of text.
Cope with both multiple codes and over-lapping codes
Disadvantages
Can conduct multiple searches
Can combine codes in complex searches
Can pick out instances of pre-defined categories
Used to help the researcher overcome analysis block
Can only support the intellectual processes, cannot be a substitute
Can not change opinions and contradict themselves during an interview
Might be beyond an individuals budget
User-error can lead to undetected mistakes or misleading results
Can lead to an over-emphasis on mechanical procedures.
Quantitative Data Analysis
The following methods can be taken for analyzing quantitative data
Computer software
Easiest and quickest way to analyze data
Statistical technique
Basic knowledge of statistical techniques is important
Finding a connection
Finding out the connection between one variable and a number of other variables.
Most common package used is SPSS for windows
Data input can be a long and laborious process
All needed to do is count responses and reproduce them
This is called bivariate analysis
The following methods can be taken measuring quantitative data
Quantitative Data Analysis
Nominal scales
Respondent answers a question in one particular way, choosing from a number of mutually exclusive answers
Ordinal scales
Some questions offer a choice but from the categories given it is obvious that the answers form a scale
Interval scales
Come in the form of numbers with precisely defined intervals. Precise comparisons can be made between these scales
Arithmetic mean
A straightforward calculation used with interval scales where specific figures can be added together and then divided

Thank you
