Alpha Imaging Technology (AIT) was founded in 10/2002 with major funding from MTK (MediaTekInc.). The first round funding is about $7M. M.K. Tsai, chairman of MTK, also serves as chairman of AIT. In year 2004 and 2005, AIT made profits with EPS about NT$11.
The founding team are veterans in ISP design and have deep know-how in image signal processing and multimedia technology.

AIT currently employs about 60 people. The number of employee continues to grow due to booming mobile phone market and the release of several successful products to the market.
AIT is very technology-oriented with over 90% of employee working on product development or technical support. Over 70% of employee receive master degree in engineering.

AP Product Line
AIT’s products are divided into three product lines: AP (Application Processor) product line, ISP product line, and MMP (Mobile Multimedia Processor) product line.
The MMP product line is the most mature with generations of products released and mass production.
The first product of ISP product line, AIT818, will be released Q4/2005. This is a low cost ISP-only product that is very suitable for Smart phones, PDA phones, and 3G phones to augment the camera function.
The AP product line is under developing. The first product, AIT840, will function as host in mobile phone with full-featured multimedia functions.

AIT has released several series of mobile multimedia processors.
The AIT700 series support feature-improved ISP(VGA) and JPEG. H263 video and LCD controller is also implemented..
The AIT800 series support feature-improved ISP(1.3M) and JPEG. H263 video and LCD controller and Java game is also implemented.
The AIT810 series support advanced ISP(up to 3M) and extensive audio and video functions such as MPEG4, MP3, AAC, AAC+, WMA, MIDI, etc.
The AIT715 series are for very low cost music phones.
The AIT820 series, which will be released Q1/2006, are for high end multimedia phones.

Based on the ISP engine in the successful MMP products, AIT is developing an ISP-only product that is suitable for Smart phones, PDA phones, 3G phones, and feature phones with strong requirements on picture quality and extensive camera controls such as auto focus lens, mechanical shutter, and flash light control.

AIT’s ISP is hardware-based. It can process images on-the-fly in real time without requiring large image buffer. The overall chip size and cost can be reduced.
AIT’s chips all embed either an ARM or 8051 processor. This allows very flexible control and programmable features.
AIT’s design team is also very experienced in low-power IC design. All of AIT’s products are designed with power constraint and manufactured with low-leakage process, therefore consumes very low leakage current during standby mode, and very low power consumption during active mode.

AIT supports very extensive ISP features. These include auto-exposure, auto-white-balance, auto-focus, lens shading compensation, automatic defect pixel compensation, … etc. The technology is based on many years of digital still camera experience and extended to accommodate special requirements and limitations of mobile phones.
AIT invests great amount of engineering resources on the development and improvement of key technologies. For example of MPEG4 engine, AIT’s algorithm requires very small buffer size to achieve the same performance. The overall die size and chip cost can then be reduced.
On the audio, AIT also spends great effort in reducing the code size and CPU bandwidth requirement while maintaining the same or better audio quality. For example, AIT’s implementation of EAAC+ is probably the most optimized in the industry with (code+data) smaller than 170KB and requires only 59MHz of ARM7 bandwidth.

Through years of experiences in ISP designs, AIT has accumulated deep know-how on image processing. AIT has developed a full set of tools and programs that help in the analysis, test, and tuning of image quality.
In less than 3 years since founded, AIT has over 20 patents in image processing either been granted or pending.

AIT developed most of the key technologies in-house. These include ISP, JPEG, MPEG4, H263, MP3, AAC, AMR, EAAC+, 3D sounds , 2D graphic engine, and JAVA accelerators.
Also, AIT has ported WMA, 64-poly MIDI, DRM, onto our platforms.
AIT has implemented PC-cam, MTP for Windows DRM, virtual COM, USB storage, file systems, etc. to offer complete mobile multimedia solutions.
AIT is now working on H264 for mobile TV, TV-encoder, 3D graphic engines (OpenGL-ES) for 3D MMI and games, DV camcorder (MPEG4 640x480 30fps, AAC encode), and will soon start the development of video stabilizer, PictBridge direct printing, VC1, WMA pro+, video/music streaming, and 3G-324M video conferencing.
