Today’s Harsh Reality

Child rights today is a burning issue. According to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, every child has:

The right to a childhood The right to be educated The right to be healthy The right to be treated fairly The right to be heard

All of us, in various walks of life have seen the violations of these rights. The below statistics give a glimpse of this heart breaking reality:

Child Abuse — 40 million children below the age of 15 suffer from abuse and neglect. (United Nations Children’s Fund, 2008)

Child Labour — 246 million children, one in every six children aged 5 to 17, are involved in child labour. (International Labour Organization, 2002)

Child Soldiers — UNICEF estimates that more than 300,000 children under 18 are currently being exploited in over thirty armed conflicts worldwide.

We, at AIESEC, want to do something about this. It is ingrained in our values to ensure a constant battle is fought against these atrocities. Every year we plan and implement various projects to tackle these issues. One such very successful endeavour is Balakalakaar.

Phase 1 - Perennial Impact

The Concept

Owing to its vow to impact society in a positive manner, AIESEC in Hyderabad initiated a unique campaign to help those who need it the most: the underprivileged children of Hyderabad.

Since 2005, AIESEC in Hyderabad conducts a yearlong project which involves international interns, coming down to help the children that hail from various backgrounds. AIESEC in Hyderabad, pioneered this project which has since been adapted by other cities of India. It involves interns coming down and teaching music, drama, art and craft to the underprivileged children.

The aim of this project is to spread communal harmony and promote healthy living amongst the children and to help them understand various cultures. Our ultimate aim is to ensure that we develop their personality and leadership skills which will help them harness their true potential, to understand the world in a better way and become the leaders of tomorrow.

Phase 2 – Balakalakaar The Event

There is a garden in every childhood, an enchanted place where colours are brighter, the air softer, and the morning more fragrant than ever again.

~Elizabeth Lawrence

History of Balakalakaar

As AIESEC Hyderabad’s biggest event in a calendar year running annually since 2005, Balakalakaar is aligned to the cause of building an environment that helps improve the quality of life that is faced by these underprivileged children in our city. It promises to be a one of its kind event; conducted at a much smaller scale in the year 2005, engaging about 150 street kids at an NGO - Don Bosco Nav Jeevan, moving to over 3000 children this year! Today, Balakalakaar has emerged as the creation of an opportunity to help these children discover and develop their skills in art forms of various types.

Over the last few years this event has established itself as the single largest platform for the socially and economically underprivileged children to showcase their artistic talent. This event aims to inculcate an appreciation towards the artists and to provide a platform to these children and encourage them in pursuit of the same.AIESEC Hyderabad will host Balakalakaar to amalgamate with the impactful experience created by Project Footprints.

Balakalakaar 2012 - Overview

Theme The terms Peace, Truth and Ahimsa bring forth the memory of the Father of the Nation: Mahatma Gandhi. To the young children of Hyderabad, we aimed at inculcating Gandhi and his teachings into their thought process so that they too would understand the essence of Bapu.
