1. Trying to build a family
• Focus on building high-performance team– You can’t choose your family.– You can’t fire your family

• You can train people, but you can’t change people
• Look for– Naturally motivated person– Willingness to be coach and to share knowledge– Good temperament
• Careful with:– “Superstar” developers– Social media celebrities– MNC backgrounds– Freelancers
3: Overselling your company
• Small startups tends to oversell their company
• Avoid:– Offering monetary incentives during hiring– Promising perks you do not yet have
• Do:– Show enthusiasm when describing your company– Explain your vision
4. Insufficient documentation
• Offer letters must cover– Work scope– Termination clause– Core benefits
• Problems:– Unclear expectation– Firing difficulties
5. Keeping dead-weights
• You often know a candidate fit within the first
month.
• Fire if they don’t fit– Costly to keep them– Send signals to current staff
• Ask: “what have you done for the company lately?”
