o Culture of mola with carps in ponds and vegetable production in dikes/homestead areas by farming households 2011 : Jessore and Rangpur 2012 : Jessore, Rangpur, Mymensingh, Faridpur and Barisal

Field trial completed, data collection, entry, analysis to write article, working paper to be completed by October 2013. Important lessons learned will be shared.

o Participatory Action Trial: Jessore, Rangpur, Mymensingh, Faridpur and Barisal set up in 2013. Guidelines to collect information will be provided useful to collect information to develop science based outcomes.

Cages for Fingerling and Foodfish Production

o 2011: Cages for Foodfish Production of Tilapia (GIFT, monosex – male) at Rangpur, Khulna and Barisal in beel, canal and river o 9 women from poorest households in each area Total 27

women o Designing of cages - 9 m3 nylon fixed net cages with simple

metallic frameo Rangpur – set up in beel; Khulna – canal within polder

30;Barisal – river (initial), canal o Treatment: 3 stocking densities of fingerling (200, 300 and

400 per m3); used floating commercial feed.

Cages set up in beel and canal waters showed success in production, poor result obtained in river. Most cases the profit margin obtained was low or negative due to high cost of fingerlings, high feed cost and price of fish sold is low. No significant variations in productivity related to stocking densities, higher stocking density resulted higher production with higher investment.

Cages for Fingerling and Foodfish Production

2012: To get better understanding on input uses (fingerling, feed) and marketing of fish the trail in Rangpur, Barisal, Khulna and Faridpur with 56 women from poorest households.  Results: Preliminary analysis showed…o Highly variable production and income among farmers within the same siteso. Khulna : High mortality of fish in cages (>70%) due to less water availability, due to faster growth of fish survived showed good production and in around 50% of them showed positive profit margin. o Major factors for low profit margin are found to be related to: sale of fish at low price (Taka 111/kg although, the other household in the same site sold Taka 150/kg).o Cages set up in river faced acute problems of water pollution, infestation by aquatic weeds and much mortality of fish, also more insecurity – cut of cages and complete loss of fish

Cages for Fingerling and Foodfish Production

o Rangpur received high survival (>80%) but sold fish at very low price, purchased fingerlings at high cost and high FCR (>2.5), however for one farmer in same site the FCR is 1.4 who received very high profit margin o Barisal: 4 cages in one location (Fadiabaza, Lebukhali, Dumki) and 5 cages set up in Seali, Badrapur in Potuakhali. Very high performance with higher profit margin in 1st cycle by all in Lebukhali and it is expected to be doubled in 2nd cycle (on-going), along with higher efficiency in production, feed use, selling of fish at premium price is importantly came out for such results. o Faridpur – cages set up in Faridpur in river showed poor outcomes

2013 and onwards - participatory adoption trial (PAT), Rangpur, Khulna, Barisal, no financial support, they do the operation using their own funding (kept as revolving funding. Will develop a CN on monitoring of the research with the farmers [Participatory Monitoring Trial in Rangpur, Khulna, Barisal and Faridpur

Improving Quality Fish Seed Production

o All Hubs: Conducted Hatchery Survey (Carp, Tilapia and Pangus 300 hatcheries) and Organize Stakeholder Workshops o Rangpur & Mymensingh selected contact hatcheries (30 hatcheries; 13 carp 2 tilapia in Rangpur; 7 carp and 8 Tilapia in Mymensingh)o Organize meeting/workshops with selected hatcheries and experts o Collection of detailed information of the hatcheries o Development of Technical and Business Plan (draft plan completed)o Establish Breeding Nucleus in private hatchery using 14th generation of GIFT imported from WorldFish Malaysia (through FtF Aquaculture Project)o Distribution of improved germplams of rohu, catla, mrigal collected from RFLDC-Danida contact hatcheries origin from Halda River and BFRI. o Plan to distribute improved germplasm of GIFT to all the contact hatcheries (9) for development of improved broodfish to use in 2014. o Plan to establish a BN in Rangpur Hub for tilapia

Technical and Business (T&B) Plan Development

Purpose: To establish the system for production and supply of improved quality fish seed in a sustainable way CSISA-BD project is developing the T&B Plan.

o 30 Plans (one for each hatchery; 13 carp and 2 tilapia hatcheries in Rangpur and 7 carp and 8 tilapia in Mymensingh) for 10 years

o Experts – Faculties and students from Biology and Genetics Department of BAU

o T & B plan will be provided to the hatcheries by September 2013.
