Two tools that I use are:

1. Creative Commons search

http://search.creativecommons.org/

With this I can quickly get images and video for my blog, most only needing attribution.

2. Google Docs

http://docs.google.com/

I was hesitant at first, but I love that I can copy and pastenotes for future reference without ever closing my internetwindow.

Just another way to bring minimalism to blogging.

What are Your Favorite 10 Blogging Tools?

It’s time for a little discussion - lets talk blogging tools.

Over in the ProBlogger.com forum there’s been a lot of talk about different tools, applications, platforms and plugins that helps to improve blogs. I’m loving the differentopinions and experiences and thought it’d be a good question to open up to the widercommunity - what are your favourite 10 blogging tools?

I suspect most of us will probably include our blogging platform (Blogspot, WordPress,TypePad etc) in the list somewhere but other than that anything goes. Perhaps it’s acomments tool, perhaps a desktop editor, perhaps a plugin or widget - anything goes!

But limit it to 10!

I use Scribefire with FireFox, the Dictionary dot com toolbar, and the addthis as an add on.

Personally I don’t like the desktop blogging tools. I like to useFirefox and utilize their different tabs to switch back and forthwhen I’m writing posts.

Here we go, based on free tools and heavy optimization withsocial networks:

1- Blogger (free customizable platform)2- Windows Live Writer (free and excellent editor)3- Facebook share button (Social integration)4- Twitter share button (Social integration)5- Google Friend Connect (Social integration)6- Facebook Widget (Social integration)7- Any widget that shows Twitter updates (Social integration)8- The Gimp (Free image editor)9- RSS and Email subscription (For easy following)10- About me page (For more engaging with followers)

Just my quick thoughts…

R. KneschkeOctober 11th, 2009 1:47 am

First of course Askimet! Couldn’t sleep without it. “Search &Replace” is a quite useful plugin and does exactly what itsays.

I also love the YARPP (Yet Another Related Posts Plugin),which shows very accurately related posts.

And though I have a self-hosted WP-Blog, I love the officialWordpress.com Stats plugin, because it is much simpler andeasier than many other statistics plugins.

MK (Casey) vanBronkhorstOctober 11th, 2009 1:57 am

Wordpress has taken first place in my list. Within that, however, Sniplet takes the prize for its ability to inhale codeand spit out results in posts and pages. Formbuilder, a WPplugin for managing forms, comes in second. I’m with R.Kneschke regarding Akismet. The rest of the toolbox is filledwith my thesaurus, spellchecker and a decent dictionary.

Let’s see:

Writing part of the blogging routine: Google Doc - I canaccess it everywhere. I don’t have to bring flash drive, laptop, etc. Google Reader - looking for inspiration, something thatsparks off a new idea for a blog post and when I’m done, it’stime to type into search box of Google Reader again so I canhave a list of related links for my post. I use Picnik for imageediting. Any online dictionary to check spelling and grammar.

Plugins: I love Apture - can embed pics, videos, links, whichprovide readers with little a box showing the image of the urlI’m linking to without ever leaving my page.

Promotion: FriendFeed, Twitter, Delicious. FriendFeedautopublish the link to my new post when I hit publish, whichin turn gets sent to Facebook and Twitter. Of course, I stillhave Tweetmeme on my posts for readers who want to sharethe love.

Can I add coffee. I consume cups and cups of coffee? Helpsme a lot when writing my blog posts. :)

Ok. So if we’re looking for actual tools, I’ll come short of 10by a long shot. However, in the interest of keeping my bloggoing, someone could:

1 - use Disqus for comments, so you don’t lose anything onany of the sites you either run, or comment on.- troll the wordpress codex weekly looking for new toys toplay with, be they themes to hack or plugins t try.2 - write everything, whether it’s worth posting or not. Set it ona delay if you have to, if you’re not sure it’s worth having said, but write it down anyway, just in case.3 - read lots of blogs on lots of subjects, and pay attention totrending feels; sometimes a marketing blog anda design blogwill say the same thing within hours, even when the authorsdon’t know each other.4 - use a reader, like Google Reader to keep new postspopping up as they’re released. This also helps when lookingfor trends.5 - use Google Alerts if you’re planning a farther reachingseries of posts. If you get good at it, you can ride the waveand pick excellent times to release your comments.6 - Tumbl. Whether it’s through tumblr or through your ownsite. I built a Tumblelog function into my WordPress themefor this. Tumbling keeps content flowing, and means ifsomeone said it well enough, you can just toss peoplethrough to them, rather than expending extra energy rewritingit yourself.7 - keep reading offline too. Pick up a good book every sooften, fiction or non-fiction, and read it critically to pick up onthe author’s voice as well as the story they tell. This will helpyour writing, which will help your blogging.8 - get a pen pal or two, keep up with people. When you’reconversing in long-letter format, your skills go up as well.Twitter might force you to get better with your words, butthere’s no substitute for cohesive, directing writing.9 - red ProBlogger. Do I get brownie points now?10 - keep YOUR own voice. Above all else.Sometimes ittakes years to develop a writing voice, but readers canrecognize when a post is forced, or when you’re playingcopycat. Write like yourself and you’ll enjoy writing more, andkeep blogging longer. If you’re not writing your own words itbecomes a chore, and chores have a habit of getting thelowest spot on the priority list.

There we have it. At least, that’s my list. I know it’s not assnazzy as using Posterous or Delicious for notes andemploying time-management tools. But trust me, if youremind yourself consciously of even three of these thingsevery post you make, writing as a process will become (if it’snot already) one of your favorite things.

Tony,

Wordpress self-hosted is Wordpress.org. You host aWordpress blog on your domain and pay for the domainregistration and hosting fees.

So, your blog address would be http://www.yourdomain.comversus http://www.yourdomain.wordpress.com.

I hope that helps!Heather

I am new to blogging, so I only have two tools to share. Myfavorite two tools are Digsby and My Share the Love Widget.Digsby isn’t really a blogging tool, but it helps my blog just thesame. It is a sort of instant messenger program thatcombines a lot of services, but the best for my blog is apingbox widget. I put this on my blog, and whenever I amonline, my blog visitors can talk to me instantly. Also, which iswhy I like it better than the Yahoo Pingbox, it gives me the ipaddress of the visitor that I can click on, and find out wherethe person is in the world.

I also like my “Share the Love” widget. It is really the same asthe “Sharing is Sexy” widget you see on many blogs, just witha title line. It has a button for almost every socialbookmarking site, so if people want to share what I havewritten, they can do so right at the bottom of my posts.

WIndows Live Writer takes the cake for me. I install it on anycomputer I use to blog with and it’s just as easy as GoogleDocs to keep my drafts online.

I’ve become a fan of any site that uses CommentLuv, too. Ilove being able to see what other people are writing, and Ilove for them to see mine, too.
