Vehicle Technology Integration with Smart Phones
As of mid-2015, Apple and Google presented a new yet familiar vehicle technology in a few select automobiles.
Known respectively as CarPlay and Android Auto, they allow vehicles to synchronize with customer phones.
The idea, perhaps, seems nothing new.
However, the advancement produces a safer driving experience when using voice recognition.
A Bit of History with the Vehicle Technology
Apple previously named the vehicle technology as “iOS in the Car” in 2013.
They altered its designation to CarPlay in the following year.
For the integration to work, an iPhone of version 5 or higher is required.
The communication device must connect with a Lightning form of plug.
The phone will re-charge while serving as the brain of the automobile’s interface.
Instead of showing on the phone itself, the dashboard display will feature apps to run.
With the press of a single unique button, CarPlay will
accept voice command from Siri.
A few apps will require subscriptions in order to activate properly.
Like CarPlay, Google’s primary debut of the vehicle technology Google Auto occurred mid-2015.
It serves roles similar to CarPlay, since the two companies exist as rivals.
A standard USB cable stands as the basic connector requirement.
The operating system on a compatible phone must at a minimum run “Lollipop,” or version 5.
Both integration varieties offer services resembling each other in function.
Each of the pair provides navigational assistance through the aid of Global Positioning Systems.
A customer can use either to browse music collections stored on the appropriate type of smart phone.
Peculiarities and Competition with the Vehicle Technology
A few quirks still reveal themselves in this car technology.
As an example, Apple’s maps app can still lead commuters through strange and odd directions when used for
navigation.
In view of Google, adjustment of a few additional settings may prove a necessity in order to play music from a
preferred vendor.
Improvements continue in the works with the interfaces for both phone types.
Microsoft, in a typical and classic show of movement after something significant takes place, also brings about its own
schemes for the future.
In efforts to contend with Apple and Google, the corporation intends on establishing a potential architecture
that will interface with its own phone designs.
Regardless of the manufacturer or phone model, Android Auto and CarPlay will each roughly cost an extra $1,000 to
an automobile’s base price.
The main advantage presents itself in cost efficiency: this vehicle technology permits further features to budget-oriented automotives that might otherwise not arise.
