Top 4Runner Advantages Over Explorer
Ford Explorer used to rule the SUV world and was threatening to rule the car world, too. Back in 2000 Ford sold about 445,000 Explorers. Since then, sales have plummeted. Clearly, Ford had to do something about that sales drop. Which brings us to the 2012 Explorer, built on the front-wheel-drive Taurus and now offering a small four-cylinder engine in addition to the V6. Don’t be surprised if people start calling it a crossover or station wagon.
Toyota’s 4Runner remains true to its body-on-frame heritage. It’s a real truck with real truck capabilities. For buyers seeking maximum ruggedness, there’s only one thing to do: buy the SUV that’s built Toyota-tough.
Look inside for detailed info about this summary, important safety information and disclaimers.
uTiliTy Utility is an SUV’s middle name, and 4Runner has the room and innovation to prove it. Explorer carries less and is less flexible in how it does so.
•Sliding rear cargo deck 4Runner’s innovative sliding deck can make loading and unloading a snap. It holds up to 440 pounds.
•Higher cargo capacity The Ford website says Explorer “sets a new standard” with its cargo space. But since 4Runner has even more cargo room, which SUV really sets the standard?
SAfETy Because 4Runner is a Toyota, it comes with many safety features as standard. Some of these features are not even available on the Explorer.
•Star Safety System™ 4Runner includes the six technologies of the Star Safety System. Explorer does not list brake assistance as one of its features.
•front active headrests Driver and front-passenger seats both use advanced active headrest designs. Explorer uses older-style front headrests.
•Knee airbags 4Runner takes it up a notch by including knee airbags for driver and front passenger. Explorer doesn’t include any knee airbags.
2012 4Runner vs. 2012 Ford Explorer
Off-ROAd CREdibiliTy 4Runner remains true to its heritage of durability and superb off-road capability. Ford is taking Explorer in a different direction that may compromise its SUV credentials.
•body-on-frame construction This is considered the gold standard for ruggedness and capability. Explorer uses a car-like unibody design.
•Higher limits In basic measures such as ground clearance and approach and departure, 4Runner shows it can attempt more challenging terrain than Explorer.
•Two-speed transfer case 4WD 4Runners include the extra control afforded by a two-speed transfer case. Ford dropped that option from the new Explorer.
TOwing Toyota knows that many SUV owners have things they want to tow. 4Runner responds by being ready to tow from day one. Explorer needs extra attention.
•Tow prep not needed Out of the box, 4Runner comes equipped with the hardware and electrical harness needed for towing. Not so the Explorer, which requires a tow-prep package.
•not limited by four cylinders Explorer’s new available four-cylinder engine is limited to a max tow capacity of 2,000 lbs.

Explorer is offered in three grades. And now all three are offered with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine for an extra $995. Clearly, Ford is charging extra for fuel efficiency. Perhaps in a nod to its Taurus roots, Explorer has no direct competitor to the off-road overachiever known as the 4Runner Trail Edition.
Here are some of the major features of the Explorer range.

Off-road enthusiasts know that body-on-frame construction is the gold standard. The separate frame is a robust platform for the suspension and driveline. Yet many of Explorer’s components are bolted to the body.

Among measures of off-road capability, three stand out: approach angle, departure angle and ground clearance. 4Runner is better at all of them, meaning Explorer may have trouble on some terrain that 4Runner would eat for lunch.
