WHAT IS A SCRAMJET ENGINE?

Scramjet stands for supersonic combustion ramjet.

Combustion takes place in supersonic airflow .Air breathing jet engine.Has no turbo machinery.Integrated engine vehicle designed for aircraft

and missile.

COMPONENTS OF SCRAMJET ENGINESThe scramjet is composed of three basic

components:

1. The converging Inlet : incoming air is compressed and decelerated.

2. A Combustor : gaseous fuel is burned with atmospheric oxygen to produce thrust.

3. A diverging Nozzle : heated air is accelerated to produce thrust.

PRINCIPLE OF WORKING:

INLET The air approaches at supersonic speed

into the inlet . The air is heated due to compression. The hot air is then let into the

combustion chamber.

Page 6: Scramjet

COMBUSTION CHAMBER Fuel is sprayed on the hot air in the

combustion chamber.Dissociation of fuel takes place which

increases the temperature of the air.The whole combustion process takes

place at supersonic speeds. The ignited fuel along with the air is

sent into the nozzle for exhaustion.

Page 7: Scramjet

NOZZLEThe gases are gushed out

through the nozzle. The release of the gases

produces forward thrust. The thrust produced exceeds the

drag , which is the cause for forward motion.

FUELSHydrogen is the most commonly

used fuel.Steam is produced as a by

product which is eco friendly.Use of hydrogen eliminates the

need for igniters.

Page 9: Scramjet

Advantages of scramjetDoes not have to carry oxygen. No rotating parts, making it easier to

manufacture.Less weight and simple design.

Page 10: Scramjet

Disadvantages of scramjetAs scramjet cannot produce efficient

thrust until mach 5,it requires additional propulsion systems.

High costCooling is required.Testing difficulties.
