Stereotypes

There are two main stereotypes that people think of when it comes to young

people;

The usual stereotype that screams ‘Violent! Asbos! Hoodies!”

Page 4: Representation of Youth

And the other that whispers ‘A* student, polite and friendly.’

The stereotypes that are applied to young people do not range at all. It appears to be that many young people are seen from a narrow point of view. There are only opposite extremes. These representations are just black and white.

Sub-Cultures A subculture is a group of people with different ideologies and usually music and fashion tastes than that of the larger group they are a part of.

Greasers Greasers was a youth sub-culture that originated in the 1950s, mainly in America. Rock and Roll music was a major part of the culture and the two main figures of the look were Marlon Brando and James Dean. The name Greaser came from their greased-back hairstyle.

Mods/Rockers

The mods and rockers were two conflicting British youth subcultures of the early to mid 1960s. Media coverage of mods and rockers fighting in 1964 sparked a moral panic about British youths and the two groups became labeled folk devils.

Hippies

The hippie subculture was originally a youth movement that originated in the US during the mid 1960s and spread to other countries around the world.

Ravers

A raver is someone who parties all night long. This sub culture is inspire by techno music and raves. They also tend to wear bright fluorescent colours.

GrungeEmerged in the 1980s in America, was inspired by hardcore punk, heavy metal and indie rock. Grunge is a combo of punk style and outdooir wear of dark colours.

Gangster The term gangster is a sub culture that is inspired by rap music, this culture usually reflect the struggle that people have and their thrive for a better life. This culture is widely associated with crime since the emergence of gangsters like AL Capone and was pioneered in the mid 1980s.

Representations of stereotypesIn British TV and Film it seems as though only

the violent, hooded stereotype of young people is presented.

TV and FilmThe emergence of films like Kidulthood that portray young people as violent and troubled hoodies, has made it seem like British Media are only highlighting the worst of the stereotypes applied to young people. TV shows support this stereotype that young people are all troublesome with shows like Youngers.

Music and Comedy Music videos have also started to support this stereotype of troubled young people with famous singers like Rihanna portraying this stereotype in their ideas an example being the ‘We found love’ video. In comedy, people tend to make fun of this stereotype applied to young people and don’t seem to subvert or support this idea.
