The Villain

In our thriller there is a very clear villain, Jasper Howard, and this character is played by Thomas Wragg. In our opening scene we paid close attention to Mise en Scene in order to make sure that he was portrayed exactly the way we wanted. Firstly, he was dressed in a dark hoody. Dark clothing traditionally signifies evil in the media and in other thrillers so we therefore decided that it was appropriate for this character. A hoody was used to cover his face which tells the audience that he is up to something shifty so he doesn’t want to be caught and he doesn’t want anyone to know who he is. This encourages the themes of mystery and danger. Secondly, we ensured that every scene he was in there was low key lighting to help keep his identity hidden and also it would be dark which would link in with the ‘evil’ theme. While we were filming, Tom had to act panicky and as though he was in a rush which helped build suspense. Building suspense is a key code and convention of a thriller. It also told the audience that he had a limited amount of time and that someone could come home at any moment. Our opening hints that Erin is on her way to the house. It is evident that Jasper Howard is quite clever because he knows where to retrieve the evidence from and how to get rid of it. Jasper is also shown to be immoral as he is trashing someone’s house and then doesn’t hesitate to shoot a young girl.

Our Villain

Jasper Howards’ and Mr White’s characters are similar in many ways. Firstly, both Mr White and Jasper are dressed in black as it is common knowledge that black is worn by criminals and is traditionally known to be villainous. Secondly, the intentions of both characters are very similar. They aren’t cold, hard murders. Their main goal is to obtain as much money as is possible with as little to harm to others as they can. However, if it is necessary they will shoot down their ‘enemy’ without a sense of guilt. In reservoir dogs Mr White shoots two police officers and in our thriller Jasper shoots Erin due to her walking in on him. This shows that both characters possess selfish, determined, ruthless and immoral characteristics. Both characters main aim is not to be caught by the police. Finally, both characters show they are prone to making bad decisions which is a typical characteristic shared by criminals worldwide.
