Automatic Transmission in IndiaIf there’s one country on the face of planet Earth which
desperately needs cars with an automatic transmission, it is India. Shifting gears up and down using a manual gearbox while driving in India, with its lunatic traffic blatantly disregarding all rules is enough to make even the most saintly person yank their hair out. Plus, for the most part, the roads are no help either, making drivers jump on the brakes constantly to avoid potholes. The only problem, and this is a big one, is that cars with automatic transmissions were more expensive to buy and their fuel economy was appalling.

Celerio’s Automatic Manual Transmission The car in question is called the Celerio and it comes equipped with something known as an automated manual transmission. Unlike proper automatic gearboxes which have complicated bits like torque convertors and whatnot, the Celerio’s transmission is actually just a regular manual gearbox. But instead of the driver shifting gears using a traditional gear lever, there is a hydraulic unit coupled to this gearbox that does the shifting for you. All the driver needs to do is put the gear selector to D (drive), N (neutral) or R (reverse). Since this is not a conventional automatic gearbox, there aren’t options for Park, Sport or Low.MOTOR TREND India
Maruti Celerio Engine OptionsPower comes from a 1.0 litre, 3
cylinder petrol engine that makes 67 bhp. This is sufficient for daily commutes and regular city driving, which is what this car was chiefly designed for. Driving on highways will not be very spirited but the Celerio more than compensates for it with the single best part about this car. With this engine and the automated manual transmission, the ARAI-certified fuel economy of this little hatchback is an incredible 21 kpl!
