MALE GAZE ANALYSIS ON THE BEYONCÉ MUSIC VIDEO

Hanna Burrows

CLOSE UPS At the start of the video she is looking around

the room, this can show the facial expressions of invitational, this means that she is not looking at the camera and only focusing on her eyes and mouth.

This expression was identified by Marjorie Ferguson. It is important because Marjorie first identified different facial expressions and because of these we can see how people view others and how women show themselves to men.

EXTREME CLOSE UPS The close up allows you to see her eyes and her

facial expression. This lets you see her eyes in detail

This links to gender because you can tell she is female by the her face and by the things she does to get attention from men.

She also has female fans which can see her as very beautiful in these shots and make them want to watch her and be a bigger fan of her.

CLOTHING CHOICE AND SOUND At the start Beyoncé is wearing nothing and

looks very sexually appealing to men. She looks sweaty and wet, which could be a sign of sex as she does say “make love to me” a lot of times in the song this can also show she is desperate for men and that he has the control.

Later on she is wearing very tight and revealing clothing, which has more of her skin out than anything else, this can be the expression of romantic and sexual. This links to gender because the things she wears a man would not.

LIGHTING The lighting changes a lot, just like how her

clothing changes a lot. At the start she is just in a black room, where

you can only see her body and nothing else around her. She then changes to a blue room which lots of lighter blue lights shinnying around. Then she goes into a red room where there is a bright white light shining, which shows off her figure. All these colour changes show of her figure an make her look very feminine and glamorous to the male/female eye.

SLOW MOVEMENTS

There is slow camera movements at some parts of the music video and sometimes Beyoncé walks and moves really slow, this can show she is being sexual to the male and making him know that she is around and wants him. She is also being the inspiration for the male to take full action on her, because she is allowing him by slowing the narrative down. In the picture below it is where one of the slow movements takes place.

This links to gender because she is flicking her hair and most men do not have long enough hair to flick.

OTHER TRANSITIONS

The editor uses lots of other transitions such as dissolve, fade-in, fade-out, wipe, slow motion and visual effects.

They use fade-in and fade-out a lot in the shots but because of this each fade-in was a different view point of her than the last one was, which allows you to see her in many ways, rather than just one shot the whole time.
