Introduction

Ignition timing is the process of setting the angle relative to piston

position and crankshaft angular velocity that a spark will occur in the combustion chamber near the end of

the compression stroke.

HOW it

works

Engines will use an electric

spark that ignites the

fuel/air mixture that

propels the car.

This involves the engine

ignition and when the

spark plugs “fire”, it

literally creates a spark in

the combustion chamber

to release energy

The efficiency of the engine is

impacted by the correct ignition

timing

Slightest mistakes in

timing & engine will not run

properly

Any kind of interference in the cam timing

results in collision of piston & valves

Engine Timing Problems

BACKFIRING

ENGINE STOPS

AT IDLE

KNOCKING

DIESELING

ENGINE STOPS

ABOVE IDLE

Solutions

Backfiring

. Check the mounting bolt.

• Check the engine .

• Faulty ignition coil.

• Check if the points are correctly set and

are in good condition.

Engine stops at speeds

. Distributor cap is cracked.

• Check the rotor.

• Faulty ignition coil.

• Check if the points are correctly set and

are in good condition.

Knocking

• It is caused by a condition named detonation.

• Check the spark plugs.• Check the distributor cap & rotor.• Check the ignition timing & replace the

worn components.

Dieseling

• Engine idle speed set to high &

overheating.

• Incorrect ignition timing

• Check if the distributor is mounted

securely to the engine.

Engine stops at idle

• Spark plug does not fire.

• Ignition timing set incorrectly.

• Distributor worn due to excessive

movement in the distributor shaft so

unable to set the timing correctly.

Symptoms to change a timing belt:-

Exhaust & Timing Belt Problems

Engine start problem between 2000 to 4000 RPM due to loose timing belt

Starting & Running Problem

The exhaust & intake valves movement should function at the right

time

The timing of all the individual components causes the problem

Loose Teeth

Change your timing belt for every 60,000miles to 110,000miles

Refer car manual for advice

about mileage

• Know your car if needs adjustment or not

• Grasp the Ignition Cycle

• Know the Ignition timing number

• Connect your timing light & check vacuum timing

• Ask a helper to accelerate your engine

• Concentrate on harmonic balancer and find the number

• Loosen the bolt of distributor & turn in one direction

• Align the timing marks & set where you want in between 34 & 36 degrees

• Tighten the distributor bolt when finished
