The First Day of Spring: Fun Facts About the Vernal Equinox

The first day of spring is also

called the vernal equinox. “Vernal” and “equinox” are Latin terms meaning “spring” and “equal night” respectively.

Is the Vernal Equinox Really Equal? The idea is that on the first day of spring there are exactly 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of darkness, but it rarely works out that way.

There is always a time each spring, and again each fall, when the hours of light and darkness are equal, but it usu-ally occurs before the vernal equinox and after the autumnal equinox.

First Day of Spring--Above and Below the Equator The vernal equinox, which

occurs on March 20th or 21st each year and signals the start of spring in the Northern Hemi-sphere, is also the autumnal equinox—the first day of au-tumn—in the Southern Hemi-sphere. Conversely, the autum-nal equinox in the north, which occurs in late September, is the first day of spring south of the equator.

Fun Facts About the First Day of Spring Here are a few other interesting facts about the first day of spring:

If you were standing on the equator during either the vernal or autumnal equinox, you would see the sun pass directly overhead, the only two times in the year when that is true.

The two equinoxes are also the only times during the year when the sun rises due east and sets due west.

FAMOUS WORDS

Interesting Facts You Never Knew

http://www.playworks.net/article-march-toward-spring.html

“Everyone has inside of him a piece of good news. The good news is that you don't know how great you can be! How much you can love! What you can ac-complish! And what your poten-tial is!”

...Anne Frank

Did you know…

An astronaut can be up to 2 inches taller returning from space.

Did you know…

An average person will spend 25 years asleep. Did you know…

The only continent with no active volcanoes is Australia. Did you know…

A ‘jiffy’ is actually 1/100th of a second.

March marks the transition from

winter to spring, hours of darkness

continue to decrease as those of

light increase until we arrive again,

on the 20th of March, at

the spring equinox. Icy

winter winds give way to

soft breezes, days grow

longer, and the sun

warmer. One unknown

author describes the

month well.

The March wind roars

Like a lion in the sky,

And makes us shiver

As he passes by.

When winds are soft.

And the days are warm and

clear,

Just like a gentle lamb,

Then spring is here.

The arrival of spring is different

throughout the country. In the

south, folks watch as trees emerge

from barren to budding before

bursting into canopies. Farther

north the winter weary will be wait-

ing for crocus to peek through the

snow. Everywhere weather will be

unsettled, alternating between win-

ter and spring. Charles Dickens de-

scribed "one of those March days

when the sun shines hot and the

wind blows cold: when it is summer

in the light, and winter in the

shade."

Now's the perfect time to prepare

for summer gardening. Whether

growing vegetables or flowers,

starting from seeds is less expen-

sive than buying plants at the nurs-

ery and makes an enjoyable family

learning experience. I vote for

growing sunflowers. The possibili-

ties are endless, from dwarf to gi-

ant, sunny yellow and vibrant red

to winter and lime, orna-

mental to eatable. Imag-

ine starting out in spring

planting seeds and end-

ing in autumn roasting

seeds for delicious, nu-

tritious snacks.

Neighborhood birds would be de-

lighted with dried sunflowers come

winter.

So...how shall we begin our plant-

ing /tending /harvesting adven-

ture? One way is to re-purpose

cardboard egg cartons into seed

starting trays. Begin by cutting the

lid off an egg carton along the

hinge. To insure that soil does not

get too wet when watering the

seeds, poke drain holes in the bot-

tom of the egg carton. Place the

egg carton inside its lid which will

serve as a saucer to catch excess

water.

Fill the cavities in the carton with

potting soil, make a hole in the

center of each mound of soil, and

drop in a seed. Carefully cover each

seed with potting soil and gently

water until the soil is moist but not

soaked. A mister is a good way to

water without over doing it.

Place the seed trays in a warm

sunny location, keep the soil moist,

and watch the seedlings grow.

Once the sprouts are two or three

inches tall, transplant to a larger

container or, when weather per-

mits, outdoors in the garden.

How Much Do You Know About the First Day of Spring? Continued from page 1… In spring, the Earth’s axis is tilted toward the sun, increasing the number of daylight hours and bringing warmer weather that causes plants to bring forth new growth. There is a persistent myth that at the vernal equinox, and only at the vernal equinox, can you stand a raw egg on its end. There is an equally persistent rebuttal that says it’s not possible at any time to balance a raw egg on its end. Neither assertion is true. With a little patience (or sometimes a lot), you can balance a raw egg on its end at any time of year. The first day of spring has nothing to do with it.

• 1 shallot, minced

• 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil, plus 1 tablespoon

• 2 tablespoons sherry vinegar

• 1 1/2 packed cups basil leaves

• Pinch red pepper flakes

• 1/2 lemon, juiced

• Pinch kosher salt and cracked black pepper

• 10 (21 to 25) shrimp

• Wooden skewers, soaked in water for at least 20 minutes

• 2 bulbs fennel, thinly sliced

• 3 packed cups baby arugula

• 2 cups halved cherry tomatoes

• 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan

Directions In a food processor, pulse the garlic, shallots, 1/4 cup oil and sherry vinegar until well incorporated. Add the basil leaves, red pepper flakes, lemon juice, salt, and pepper. Pulse to combine. Remove the mixture from the food processor and add it to a large bowl. Reserve a small amount of marinade in another bowl for finishing the shrimp. Toss the shrimp in the marinade and thread them onto skewers. Heat a grill pan to high and cook the skewers for 2 minutes on each side. Remove them from grill and add them to the bowl with the re-served marinade. Add the fennel, arugula and tomatoes. Toss lightly to evenly coat. Arrange the salad on serving plates and sprinkle with Parmesan. Yield: 2-4 servings.
