As there is no longer a machinist standing bycheckingeverypartandmonitoringthemachine,lightsoutmachiningwilluseon-machinegaugingandautomatictoolbreakagemonitoringsystems.Worldclassmachineswillalsodeliveranaccuracythatissofarwithintolerancethat100%checkingofpartsisnolongerrequired.Thisisdonethroughmanaging machine temperature and having astable machine base to handle vibrations. Thepolymer concrete MINERALIT is what is nowbeingusedbyadvancedmachinebuilderstoreducemachinevibrations.

•The Benefits of Lights Out Machining So,what are the actual benefits of a lightsoutworld classmanufacturing system?Well, to startoff, output is increased by around 20% over atraditionalwayofworking.Thiscomesfrombeingabletoworkformorehoursineachday.Workcanbedone24hoursadayforaround320daysperyear;comparedto20hoursperdayfor265daysperyear.Inaddition,morepartswillbeproducedineachofthesehours.Greateroutputmeansthatmachinecostsandotheroverheadsarespreadoutoveragreaternumberofparts,reducingaveragecostperpartandthetimerequiredtogetareturnoninvestment,makingmanufacturersmorecompetitive.

Everyoneknows that finding enough skilled and unskilledlabour is a challenge. Lights out machining meansthisisnolongersuchaproblem. Afurtherbenefitfromusingmoremodernmachinesis that using vertical turning machines instead ofhorizontal ones means a 50% floorspace saving.Also,worldclassmachinesintegrateturning,drilling,milling, andgrinding into the samemachine, savingbothspaceandtherequirementtopurchaseadditionalmachines. This could halve the costs of a factoryexpansionorallowanexistingfactorytoaddanextraproduction line, in addition to reducing other costssuchasairconditioningandmachinemaintenance.

Competing Globally Withalightsoutworldclassmanufacturingsystem,Thaimanufacturerscanputthemselvesinthepositiontobeabletocompeteeffectivelywiththetop auto-motivepartsmanufacturersaroundtheworld.Outputwill increase, costs per part will be reduced, andlabourandotherassociatedcostsreduced-ultimatelymeaninggreaterprofits.
