It is change, continuing change, inevitable change, that is the
dominant factor in society today. No sensible decision can be made
any longer without taking into account not only the world as it is,
but the world as it will be

ORGANIZATION OF FOCUS GROUPS
There are several tables for each Focus Group.
The Focus group moderator presents 4/5 topics, one at a time, to be discussed within two hours.
Each table - ten people max - shares comments and ideas and writes down its output.
Table coordinators summarize selected contributions.
Final outputs of each focus group will be presented during the final wrap up.

Trends of the Spark Ignition EngineProduction and testing technologies to meet stricter international standards
CHAIRMANPetter Dahlander - Chalmers University
The legislation on emissions and CO2 reduction will once again be a powerful changing agent for propulsion systems and it will be the determining factor for innovation in the traditional internal combustion engines. The significant reduction of CO2 is now an imperative no longer derogated.
MAIN TOPICS
-Turbocharging, Downsizing, Rightsizing: where and why?-The challenges for next fuel injections systems. PFI, GDI or both?-The mechanical way: variable compression ratio and valve train chances-“Dieselisation” of GDI Engine: more efficiency and more complexity-Taylor made or standard SI engines for hybrid and alternative fuels?

Fuel Injection SprayKey technologies and next challenges
CHAIRMANAnand Gandhi - SAE Commitee
One of the most important processes for the optimization and efficiency of the internal combustion engines is fuel injection. The relevance of the injection process depends on many factors, such as the physical and chemical nature of the fuel along with the fluid and thermal interaction of the spray with the in-cylinder airflow. The coupling of the fuel spray with the flow field of the combustion chamber significantly affects the quality and efficiency of the combustion process which is why optimizing the spray characteristics with the engine design is paramount.
MAIN TOPICS
-Nozzles and orifice holes: their role in the combustion optimization process-The best spray shape for each combustion process-The right imaging technique for each phenomena-Spray detection: open issues and future needs

Trends of Diesel EngineKey technologies to reduce emissions
CHAIRMAN Lucio Postrioti - Università di Perugia
Unquestionably, the compression-ignition engines are still a very important technology to the spread of a low CO2-emission mobility.
Unfortunately, the high costs of production and the high abatement costs of harmful emissions that distinguish it are making a slow and compromised spread into the market.
MAIN TOPICS
-The challenge of the Real Driving Emission target-Diesel engine & hybrid, is it worth?-Aftertreatment: a problem or a solution?-Injection system, the next generation-Light Duty and Heavy Duty: what convergent trends to face emissions challenge?

Electric and Hybrid PWTArchitectures and components in the next mainstream
CHAIRMANFederico Caricchi - La Sapienza Università di Roma
In the latest years, the market for electric cars butespecially the hybrid ones made important steps forward. Electric mobility is certainly a solution to the reduction of CO2 emissions. However, the energy accumulation technology still does not appear to be mature for mass production at reasonable cost and still does not guarantee sufficient autonomy. For this reason, a likely scenario indicates the penetration of new hybrid models on the market. In the near future, which components will represent the focus of car manufacturers in order to develop the hybrid system?
MAIN TOPICS
-Challenges and constrains of the next electrification components-Test and simulation: open issues and future needs-The latest and more promising hybrid architectures-Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles: dream or reality? Technological and socio-political issues.

The way to Autonomous DrivingAutonomous and connected driving technology
CHAIRMAN Holger Meinel - Auto Radar Expert
Autonomous driving will change our society and the way to design vehicles, while it will make a long-awaited dream of mankind come true. There will be a real revolution of mobility, being a great new input to innovation in the industry. This is what different experts are pointing. The necessary technology is mature today and just a step away from spreading into the market.
MAIN TOPICS
-Radar, Lidar, cameras, maps; which one will win?-Sensing and processing: how many A.I. will take the decision?-Testing: virtual vs real environment-Connectivity and cybersecurity: opportunities and risks-Regulation and social acceptance: a question of trust!

Challenges for the TransmissionsKey technologies and new architectures
CHAIRMANDavid Gagliardi - Oerlikon Graziano
The increasing share of hybrid cars, the need for efficiency improvement, the requirements of engine downsizing and the increasingly higher customer expectations for driveability and performance are only some of the key factors that are influencing the design and implementation of new vehicle drive systems.
