Essentially, a reliable battery is one of the most important parts for your scooter as it enables optimum performance.

Time For A New Battery?

Obvious signs that your battery needs replacing include: • Your scooter seems sluggish • It doesn’t feel smooth when driving • It’s failing to start properly • It’s not starting after a full charge

If any of these problems sound familiar, then it could well be your battery that’s causing the problem. To test this, remove the existing battery and replace it with a new one.

Mobility Scooter Batteries – Technology

Mobility scooter batteries are made using two types of technology:

Gel – offers deep discharging capability Cyclic AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) - offers superior cyclic capacity to standard AGM Batteries come in 12-volt sizes, meaning that two are required to power a 24V motor. 36V motors are also available however they are less common than the 24V variation.

Replacing The Battery

First of all, look at the manufacturer’s manual to view the make and model of your scooter so you know which one you require. Here, you may also find step-by-step instructions to guide you along the way.

Remember:

• If you don’t know which model you own, speak to your battery supplier

• You may wish to ask someone to assist you with the replacement process

• All scooters are different, the following represents a general guide only, remember, when in doubt always consult your scooter user maintenance manual

Removing The Seat

• Put the scooter into drive gear as opposed

to neutral before you turn it off – this will

prevent it moving when replacing the battery

• Next, remove the seat by pushing the levers

or undoing the pins/screws – each seat will

be different

• Use the manual if you require further

information at this stage

Removing The Batteries – Step 1

• Open and remove the cover to gain access to the mobility scooter batteries

• Take a closer look at the cable positions and take a photo to refer to later

• Unplug the battery – usually via two plugs located between the batteries

Removing The Batteries – Step 2 • Disconnect the batteries if they are being held in place by

clips or straps

• Carefully remove the batteries by keeping them upright and make sure they don’t tip over – check if there are any handles to help you

• During this process, make sure

you don’t pull any cables as you could damage the scooter and its components

• Place the batteries upright on a flat surface

Disconnecting The Batteries

• Locate the battery points – normally found on top of the battery

• Use the correct tools to undo the connections, but make sure you disconnect the positive connection first (red), before the negative one (black)

• Make sure the wires don’t touch when you are disconnecting the battery

Installing Your New Batteries

• Connect the cables to your brand new mobility scooter battery by using the same process as above

• Place the batteries in their original position

• Retighten the clips or straps and reattach the two plugs - located between the batteries

• Finally, replace the outer cover and the seat, take the mobility scooter out of drive and charge the batteries

Charging Your Battery With a new battery in place, you’ll also need a charger so that you can maintain power and travel on your scooter successfully.

3-pin point connectors are standard for the majority of mobility scooters and allow for short circuit protection and trickle charging too.

Charge your battery on a regular basis to ensure it performs to optimum efficiency.

Finally, never use a charger that’s not designed for a mobility scooter as this could cause damage.
