2015 Los Angeles Auto Show
Almost Ready for Primetime PlayersThe Los Angeles show, like the very ChineseShanghai show and the very German Frankfurtshow, is definitely a product of its locale. The airof Southern California typically permeates thisparticular show probably more than eitherShanghai or Frankfurt take from theirsurroundings. With the LA show, you canusually expect a little “tree hugger” among theproducts shown.
For this year’s show, however, the super cleancars are noticeably absent. No world premieresof fully electric models. Fuel cell vehicles andhybrids are sparse on the floor of the LosAngeles Convention Center. While the eventwasn’t home to the debut of the latest gas-guzzling behemoth, introductions wereobviously influenced by the public’s shift due tolower gas prices.
Los Angeles gives auto makers a venue fortheir wares almost two months before the “big”show in Detroit. The timing and location providetwo things that they can’t get in January. First, there’s the location: Southern California ishome to a notoriously strong car culture whichappreciates flashy and tends to avoid tradition.
Second, because it’s not as international as theDetroit show, auto makers can get a largershare of eyeballs that might not be available inMichigan.
If you want to grow your brand in the UnitedStates, getting the attention of the fashion-forward buyers of Southern California can be afoot in the door. Buick, for example, used theLA show to introduce it’s largest (and mostpopular) sedan to the world. China is thebiggest market for Buick, but they are stillfighting for market share in North America.Hoping to tickle the fancy of locals could be abig boost for the very attractive new LaCrosse.
With thousands more press and almost toomany introductions in Detroit, a new productcan get lost. The “big fish in a little pond”attitude can go a long way, again using theLaCrosse as a prime example. It would havebeen easy to launch the new Buick in thebrand’s hometown show, but would it havegained as much attention?
A slowdown in alternatively-fueled introductionsmay be temporary, but the value of the LA showis definitely not going away.
