MOST POWERFUL LINE OF V8 PICKUPS AVAILABLE.1SERIOUS POWER FOR FULL-SIZE CAPABILITIES. When it comes to trailering, the more torque the better. And for 2005, Sierra trucks are engineered

for impressive torque. In fact, heavy-duty models with the Duramax Diesel 6600 V8 and Allison® transmission offer 310 hp and 605 lb-ft of torque—the most torque

in their class2—and that helps make Sierra the most powerful line of V8 pickups available.1 In addition, with a specially tuned 345 hp Vortec 6000 V8, the Sierra Denali

has power to spare for work or recreation. Sierra 1500 Series trucks are available with a Vortec 4300 V6, 4800 V8 or 5300 V8 Engine, depending on cab and box

configuration and whether you opt for 2WD or 4WD. The 1500HD comes with a powerful Vortec 6000 V8. 2500HD and 3500 pickups come standard with the

300 hp Vortec 6000 V8, or you may choose the Vortec 8100 V8 Big Block, with 330 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque, or the Duramax Diesel. Put it all together and you

have a lineup of trucks with remarkable trailering capabilities, with the 3500 4WD boasting a maximum trailering capacity of 16,700 lbs.3

VORTEC POWER AND PERFORMANCE. Vortec Engines are designed to provide an impressive combination of performance

and fuel efficiency.1 They have a composite intake manifold that helps keep the intake air cool to provide more power.2 V8 engines have

Coil-Near-Plug ignition to produce a reliable spark for efficient combustion. An inline, or planar, valve train helps reduce stress and allows

the use of lighter, quieter components. And the fuel-injection system aims the fuel mixture precisely at the intake valve to aid mix and

combustion. The result of all this advanced technology? The most powerful line of V8 pickups available.3

ENGINEERED FOR DURABILITY

Sierra pickups are built for the long

term. Their engines use extended-life

engine coolant, good for five years

or 150,000 miles,4 whichever comes

first. Extended-life platinum-tip spark

plugs are designed for 100,000 miles

of service before they’re scheduled

to be replaced.4 The available Vortec

8100 V8 “Big Block” Engine features

stainless steel exhaust manifolds for

enhanced durability, and it includes an

internal balancing system to reduce

stress on the high-capacity crankshaft.

Vortec 8100 V8 “Big Block” Engine

FIRST FULL-SIZE PICKUP WITH HYBRID TECHNOLOGY.

The future is here. For 2005, Sierra 1500 Extended Cab 2WD and4WD models are available with an all-new Hybrid system—the firstof its kind in a full-size pickup.5 It consists of a starter generatorintegrated between the engine and transmission and works in con-junction with the Vortec 5300 V8 Engine. The starter generator startsthe Vortec Engine and generates electricity to run auxiliary poweroutlets. Best of all, the Sierra Hybrid sacrifices little in performanceor towing capability and offers increased city and highway fueleconomy. In fact, that means the Sierra Hybrid offers the besthighway fuel economy of any full-size V8 pickup.6 Available in limitedquantities in limited geographical areas.7

FIRST BUILT-IN GENERATOR

The Sierra Hybrid is the first full-size

pickup to offer, in effect, a built-in

generator. The Hybrid system includes

four 120-volt AC auxiliary power out-

lets. Two are located under the rear

seat, and two are in the pickup bed.

You can use the outlets when driving

or parked, to power anything from

tools at a construction site to appli-

ances at a campground.

FIRST 42-VOLT DC POWER SYSTEM

At the heart of the Hybrid system is

the first 42-volt system of its kind in

a full-size pickup, with three specially

engineered batteries mounted under

the rear seat. They provide power for

the system, power the starter gener-

ator and run a unique power steering

system. A conventional under-hood

battery powers the truck’s normal

electrical items.

• Aluminum high-swirl cylinder heads

with four-valve-per-cylinder design en-

hance breathing for good combustion.

• Intelligent designs include a center-

mounted turbocharger and oil -spray

piston cooling for enhanced durability.

• Powerful standard block heater has a

1000-watt capacity for quicker start-

ups in extremely cold weather.

DURAMAX DIESEL 6600 V8: CLASS-LEADING TORQUE.2 The key to maximum

trailering capabilities is an engine with maximum torque, and the available Duramax Diesel offers a

massive amount of torque right where you need it most—at low rpm. In fact, it produces 605 lb-ft

of torque at 1600 rpm, matched by 310 hp at 3000 rpm. It’s also engineered for quiet operation and

long-term reliability. It has a nitride crankshaft and valve-seat inserts for enhanced durability. And

a deep-skirt design and induction-hardened block with a single-piece cast-aluminum crankcase help

control vibration for smooth, quiet operation.

Duramax Diesel 6600 V8 Engine

TRANSMISSIONS.LIGHT-DUTY TRANSMISSIONS. Every Sierra 1500 Series and 1500HD

truck features a rugged transmission engineered for smooth-shifting operation and

long-lasting durability. Standard and available transmissions include an electronic

four-speed automatic with overdrive or a five-speed manual with overdrive, depending

upon engine, body style and trim-level combination.

HEAVY-DUTY SERIES TRANSMISSIONS. Sierra heavy-duty trucks offer

a variety of standard and available transmissions matched to engine, body style and

trim level. Trucks with the Vortec 6000 V8 feature a five-speed manual transmission

or an available 4L80-E four-speed automatic transmission, which uses a high-extension

torque converter designed to help provide smooth power transition between gear

shifts. Heavy-duty trucks with either the Vortec 8100 V8 or Duramax Diesel 6600

V8 offer a fully synchronized ZF S6-650 six-speed manual transmission or an advanced

Allison 1000 Series five-speed automatic.

ALLISON 1000 SERIES FIVE-SPEEDAUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONHeavy-duty trucks with either the Vortec 8100 V8 or

Duramax Diesel 6600 V8 offer an advanced Allison

1000 Series five -speed automatic. It includes an

advanced grade-braking capability for superb control

when trailering (especially downhill). When this feature

is activated in Tow/Haul mode, the transmission auto-

matically downshifts when the brakes are applied to

help slow the vehicle while descending a steep grade.

EXCLUSIVE EATON® LOCKING REAR DIFFERENTIAL1

All Sierra 1500, 1500HD and heavy-duty trucks offer

the Eaton automatic locking rear differential. It is

designed to evenly distribute power to both rear wheels

in less-than-ideal traction conditions. At lower speeds,

the differential automatically senses wheel spin, locks

the rear axle and transfers torque to the rear wheel

with more traction, greatly helping your ability to handle

slippery road conditions.

A DENT-RESISTANT STEEL

The outer panels of the cab and front

end are made from a grade of steel

proven to be remarkably dent-resistant.

B SUSPENSION BRACKETS

A hydroformed frame allows for more

precise mounting points for the inde-

pendent front suspension components,

helping to improve ride, handling and

alignment quality.

C HYDROFORMED FRONT RAILS

Formed from the inside out using pres-

surized fluid, the steel front frame rails

are stronger and lighter than most

traditional boxed steel rails.

D ROLL-FORMED MID-RAILS

The mid-rails are roll-formed and draw-

bent from high-strength steel. It’s a

continuous mid-rail section between cab

and box, enhancing beam strength.

E STAMPED REAR RAILS

A strong straight-rail rear frame eas-

ily accepts trailer hitches and helps

give 1500 Series trucks a maximum

trailer weight rating of up to 9000 lbs,

and 1500HD trucks a rating of up to

10,200 lbs.1

A HIGH-STRENGTH STEEL

The mid-frame section uses a lipped

C-section and high-strength, low-alloy

steel, which is roll-formed and draw-

bent during manufacturing for maxi-

mum strength and durability (excludes

Chassis Cab models).

B HYDROFORMING PROCESS

The front frame section is hydroformed

to increase structural rigidity by produc-

ing more consistent steel-wall thickness.

C REAR SUSPENSION

Sierra Heavy Duty models feature twin-

tube, gas-charged shock absorbers,

helping to produce a smooth ride under

loaded and unloaded conditions.

D FRONT SUSPENSION

Independent torsion-bar suspension

al lows high Gross Vehicle Weight

Ratings2 and superb load-carrying capa-

bility, and helps produce a smooth ride.

Sierra Heavy Duty trucks feature a massive chassis designed to stand up to rugged use as well as provide a smooth ride. All of

the heavy-duty chassis components, including suspension systems, brakes and wheels, are engineered for rugged use. Both

2500HD and 3500 Series trucks use a multisectional modular frame design. This allows the front, mid- and rear sections to

be manufactured independently, with materials and processes best suited to help each section meet its specific performance

requirements without undue weight.

QUADRASTEER AT LOWER SPEEDS

At lower speeds (generally less than 40 – 45 mph),

the rear wheelsturn in the opposite direction of the

front wheels (illustrated above), helping to produce a

tighter turning diameter and impressive maneuverability.

Sierra 1500HD Crew Cab in Silver Birch Metallic shown with optionalQUADRASTEER four-wheel steering and other available equipment

TRAILERING PROWESS. With Sierra, trailer ratings up to an impressive 16,700 lbs1 are just

the beginning. An innovative Tow/Haul mode gives our automatic transmissions a dual-mode shift

program that can help hold gears longer to transfer more torque when it’s needed. Once you’ve got

the load moving, Tow/Haul helps you haul heavy loads in overdrive with crisper shifting. The trailering

package1 includes a trailer-hitch platform and prewired seven-pin connectors. Heated, power-

extendable /adjustable camper mirrors with turn signals in the glass are available for added

convenience. In addition, Sierra’s braking system features Dynamic Brake Proportioning. It helps

make better use of the rear brakes by electronically modulating pressure for increased effective-

ness, whether the truck is loaded or empty.

QUADRASTEER FOUR-WHEEL STEERING. With four-wheel steering, intricate maneu-

vering is easy, even if you have to work around a parked boat. But the benefits don’t end there.

At low speed, four-wheel steering lets you slip into driveways or tight parking spots with ease. At

highway speeds, it enhances high-speed transitions, like lane changes. QUADRASTEER is, quite simply, a

technological masterpiece. It electronically controls the direction of the rear wheels at different speeds

and turns the rear wheels up to a twelve-degree angle. The system can be fully automatic or driver

selectable, so you can deactivate the system for front-wheel-only steering with the push of a button.

QUADRASTEER is especially valuable when trailering. In 4WS TOW mode, the system lets the rear

wheels act as a steering axle for the trailer. That lets the trailer actually change lanes in unison with

the truck. In straight-line driving with a trailer, four-wheel steering enhances stability.

Page 16: 2005 GMC Sierra Columbia South Carolina

AUTOTRAC™ AUTOMATIC 4WD

When you engage Automatic 4WD mode (1500 and

1500HD models only), the system detects wheel

slippage and automatically transfers torque to the

front wheels for enhanced traction, and then returns

to two-wheel drive as conditions warrant. When con-

ditions don’t require the added benefits of Autotrac,

the system allows you to engage only rear-wheel

drive for improved fuel efficiency.

ALL-WHEEL DRIVE

The Sierra Denali employs an innova-

tive all-wheel-drive system—the first

of its kind in a full-size pickup. It bal-

ances the torque between the front

and rear axles, using a transfer case

that operates similarly to an auto-

matic transmission. All-wheel drive is

always activated, so you don’t have to

fuss with controls to enjoy the benefits

of improved handling and control.

DUAL-STAGE FRONTAL AIR BAGS3

1500 Series models (except 1500HD)

offer a standard dual-stage frontal

air bag system, including a sen-

sor that gauges the severity of a

crash and determines whether to

deploy one or two levels of inflation,

which helps reduce risk of injury

to passengers.

PASSENGER SENSING SYSTEM

1500 Series models (except1500HD)

feature a Passenger Sensing System.

It automatically turns the passenger-

side air bag on or off,3 depending on

the weight and position of the occu-

pant, and a status indicator on the

inside rearview mirror lets you know

whether it’s been deactivated.

1OnStar is standard on Sierra SLT models and SierraDenali. An OnStar-equipped Sierra includes a one-yearOnStar Safe & Sound service plan. See page 47, call 1-888-4-ONSTAR (1-888-466-7827) or visit onstar.comfor system information and details. 2Ability to locatestolen vehicles varies with conditions. See page 47 forimportant OnStar information. 3Always use safety beltsand proper child restraints, even with air bags. Childrenare safer when properly secured in a rear seat. Even witha Passenger Sensing System, never place a rear-facinginfant in the front seat of any vehicle equipped with anactive air bag. Air bag inflation can cause severe injury ordeath to anyone too close to the bag when it deploys. Besure every occupant is properly restrained. See yourOwner’s Manual and page 46 for more information.

ONSTAR1 SAFETY & SECURITY

In an emergency, an OnStar Advisor is there to help.

If your air bags deploy, OnStar receives a signal and

can call the vehicle to check on you. OnStar can also

work with authorities and attempt to locate a stolen

vehicle.2 Weather conditions can be obtained through

Virtual Advisor. All plans include access to Personal

Calling, a built-in, hands-free, voice-

activated phone that can receive

location-based traffic and more.
