XYZ Atlas centers on the emotional attachments we feel to the places where we live our lives. What is it that gives us a sense of belonging, in Austin and in the world around us?

Artist Jennifer Chenoweth believes it’s our experiences--both good and bad--that create our attachment to place.

Why do we travel? To experience the world with our senses, to make places that are foreign to us part of our own story. And why do we call a place home? To experience a connection with a community.

Drawing inspiration from psychologist Robert Plutchik’s Theory of Emotions and old-school Atari 3D video game graphics, XYZ Atlas aims to challenge all of us to define what it means to be truly alive and at home in the world.

The X-Vortex Location Marker is a visual representation of a pointer on a map, a three-dimensional rendering of an imaginary but recognizable object.

The XYZ Atlas will produce an exhibit in multiple locations throughout Zilker Park in May 2016.

Why Zilker Park? Because the data showed that Zilker, and Barton Springs Pool in particular, is the collective high point in Austin. That means that Zilker Park is the locus of many of our community’s positive experiences for visitors and residents alike.
