Types of paints
If the color dries on brush, you cannot use the brush again. So, wash the brush immediately after use.Acrylic colors dry very fast (less than 10 minutes).
Give a smooth finish due to the film formed. Bright colors. Water is used for thinning and cleanup, so no fumes. The paint film gives extra strength to the idol. Recommended, if you are doing clay modeling for first time or are not sure about the joinery.
Acrylic colors(Recommended)- Do not use the acrylic colors used for fabric painting. Use the once which are used by artists for painting.
Turpentine or similar solvents are used with these and hence you need to take extra protection not to smell the fumes. Buy only paints that are marked as “Non-toxic”.Oil colors take long time to dry.
Give a rich and smooth feel to the idol.Oil colors
Do not create any film and hence do not add strength to the idol.If you make them watery while painting, the water gets absorbed in the clay joints and loosens those. Avoid this.

Once the idol is made, it needs to dry (takes about two weeks time) before painting. Best drying method is to keep it in a place that has good ventilation and never near a direct heat source. Remember, it needs to air dry and not heat dry.Once dry, you can paint it using different types of colors and in different styles. Here are some details about colors.
