16 CENTURY ART AT THE M.F.A.H.

During the first two decades of the Renaissance Era came some of the most profound and

famous artist of the renaissance; they were doing some of their greatest work. From

Leonardo to Raphael and also Michelangelo, came the High Renaissance Style. They focused art that included a lot of religious meaning. The

colors were luminous and vividly attracting.

THE RENAISSANCE ERA DEVELOPMENT

There was a shift from the vivid and luminous style of painting during this time to a more elegant

style. This style “traded naturalism for artifice… employing unnaturally compressed space,

elongated figures, and acid color”. The result came to be called mannerism.

The style seems to be a dimmer tone style of painting that kept the religion integrated into the

art.

THE MIDST OF THE RENAISSANCE ERA

Before the Renaissance much of the painting was done via fresco painting. It was basically painting on walls. Once the Renaissance took its role much painting had advanced greatly. They developed a way of painting the oil directly on the canvas. It

dominated Western Art even to this day.

HOW THE PAINTING WAS DONE

(1518-1594)He was an Italian Painter.

His work was characterized by it having dramatic gestures

His paintings that he is most known for are his mannerist paintings.

As a young boy his father saw his talent and tried to get him to be the pupil of

Titian; however, after just one day, Titian sent him home and didn’t mentor him anymore.

JACOPO COMIN (TINTORETTO)

(1483-1559)His works of art contained moreover some High

Renaissance art. This was an Italian Painter.

He was an early painter of the RenaissanceBetter known as the elder brother of the painter

TitianHe was an artist but not widely known since he

was always changing careers. He had been an artist, soldier, businessman, and

bureaucrat.

FRANCESCO VECELLIO

THIS WOULD BE AN ART THAT WOULD BE CONSIDERED HIGHER RENAISSANCE STYLE

As one could see the art is based on a religious theme. It has the bright vivid colors and is very appealing.

THE ART OF THE MANNERIST

This newer type of Renaissance Art has a darker scheme. It does have theStrong colors. It is a shift from the artthat was considered a trending style which was the High Renaissance Art.

PAOLO VERONESE

(1528-1588)Italian painter based in

Venice. He began as a Mannerist and

changed into a more naturalistic style that was

influenced by Titian. He has many dramatic and

colorful styles.Patrons were the Barbarigo

family and the Barbaro family. His brushwork had much

sensibility and great splendor.

THE ART OF THE MANNERIST

The style that is being brought isn't bright and vivid. It did have a purpose though. It served to give an Emotionally resonant feeling towards the viewer.

COMPARISON BETWEEN THE MANNERIST AND THE HIGH RENAISSANCE

When the High Renaissance and the Mannerist are compared the changes are very obvious. To the left, the High Renaissance, shows a very vivid and lighted canvas. It has an everyday type of scenery. It is simply very well put and it just looks nice to stare at. To the right, there are dimmer and darker images. They show disasters and things not pleasant to see. The styles are very similar in the way they are painted. The figures look human and not extremely disproportional. In fact, the images seem to be as if in the day time there is peace(left) and at night there is chaos(right).

COMPARISON IN THE TWO MANNERIST

Just by viewing both images next to each other you see much resemblance. Both pictures have a darker scheme to them. They both have a deep dark rich color texture to them. Both have more of a dramatic effect that vibes off to the viewer. It is darker so it makes you have to focus your eyes. Once your eyes are focused, you get to see what is going on and that’s where you see a story in the art. You see a tragedy that is about to unfold.

I’ve taken an art appreciation class before, but I hadn’t been to the Museum Of Fine Arts. I loved the gallery, it had a little of everything. The Italian Renaissance art seems to be my favorite. The art is very

resonating in the mind, and the oil canvas paintings are very luminous in their glow and

detail. I usually prefer the Higher Renaissance Artwork; however, the

Mannerism portrayed in this artwork caught my eye.
