In this unit we are going to learn about geometric constructions:

-How to recognise and explore two-dimensional and three dimensional geometric shapes.

-How to compare and contrast organic and geometric shapes in works of art.

-How to identify and use different drawing tools.

-We will be able to create new pieces of work on our own by using geometric shapes.

MAIN OBJECTIVES OF THE DIDACTIC UNIT

Page 5: Ud1.1 Intro

Do you know what Geometry is?

Could you guess how a geometric construction is defined?

Can you remeber any geometrical shape or tool?

SOME PREVIOUS CONCEPTS

Page 6: Ud1.1 Intro

Geometry is about drawing shapes, angles or lines in an accurate way.

A geometric construction is a construction of geometric figures using only straight-edge and compass.

Draftsmen, architects, engineers and designers need to be able to construct geometric figures. Can you think of another profession where geometry is needed?

CAN YOU SEE ANY GEOMETRIC CONSTRUCT ION IN THESE PICTURES? CAN YOU DESCRIBE THEM?

Page 8: Ud1.1 Intro

A VOLUNTEER WILL CHOOSE ONE OF THE BUILDINGS WITHOUT SAYING THE NAME. HE/SHE WILL DESCRIBE THE PICTURE TO

THE REST OF THE CLASS.

BE THE FIRST ONE TO GUESS WHICH ONE IS HE/SHE TALKING ABOUT !

-You need a compass to draw a perfect circle.

-To draw parallel lines you can use a set of triangles.

-If you use a pencil, you can use a rubber to delete what you have drawn.

-To measure angles we normally use a protactor.-A graphite pencil is a basic drawing tool, for example, for sketching.

-To measure distances or to draw straight lines we use a ruler.-A technical pen is a specialised instrument to make lines of constant width.
