HOW THEY ARE PRESENTED

• The media stereotypically presents the gay community as being negative, or incredibly flamboyant and feminine. In recent months there has been more and more article's, where the gay community have been taking a proactive stance in defending but also defining its own culture.

• It is becoming more mainstream to see gay males being represented in mainstream media. However they are still viewed through the gay male gaze, portraying them as feminine but also passive as they are shown looking up towards the camera. However a positive side to this is that it is showing an increase in acceptance for the gay community.

SUBVERTING GAY STEREOTYPES When looking through current

popular media, I started exploring the popular dating show of first dates. For me this is a massive indication of gay males subverting from the typical stereotypes. As It shows that not all gay males are feminine, just as the media suggests.

For example a typical stereotype is there is always a man or a woman within a gay relationship . One stereotype is that one very masculine with the other being a feminine shopping lover queen. An example of gays subverting from this stereotype is this image to the right. Neither are shown as feminine.
