Situated in northern Serbia, the city of Subotica is like a treasure box overflowing with Art Nouveau gems In the second half of the nineteenth century, after the arrival of rail roads in the city, a trade of agricultural and livestock products was suddenly developed and industrialization arrived late nineteenth century. Following the example of Europe roads, public facilities, rental and private palaces, religious buildings were built. In the architecture of the city dominates the Art Nouveau style, but baroque, secession and neoclassical buildings are also found . The three most representative art nouveau buildings are: town hall, a synagogue and the Raichle Palace. Most of the buildings were constructed when Serbia and neighboring Hungary were part of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire. In Subotica, as anywhere in Europe, the best craftsmen of the time have worked on the buildings and their interiors. Art Nouveau was most popular at the turn of the centuries, in Subotica between 1893–1913.

Synagogue
The first of Subotica’s art nouveau buildings was finished in 1902 . It is renowned for being the only synagogue in this style, and for the harmony of its architectural style. Decorative flairs in the Hungarian folk style can be seen around the building: tulips, peacock feathers, hearts and roses feature inside and out. Inside there are stained glass windows and an ornate 20 metre (65 foot) tall dome.
